03. Nov 2022

The latest version for Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code is now generally available for Windows, Mac, and Linux devices. The October 2022 release adds a long list of new features, including a few new audio accessibility options, the option to include or exclude folders from Search, and more.

Every month, Visual Studio Code receives a new updated version that not only fixes bugs and issues, but adds new features, UI improvements, quality-of-life improvements, or enhances performance. The popular code editor has integrated Git and supports developers with debugging, has syntax highlighting, task running, version control, code completion, and integrates well with other tools.

VS Studio Code October 2022 Highlights

October brings VS Studio Code version 1.73. Let’s have a look at some of the highlights and noteworthy improvements.

  • Improved accessibility: For users who use audio cue indicators in their work, VS Studio Code added new audio cues for completing a task, failing a task, and if there is a terminal Quick Fix available. For screen reader users, word wrapping is also now disabled by default for an improved user experience. You can learn more about Visual Studio Code’s accessibility options with the new accessibility tag.
  • Include/exclude folders from Search: In the Search view’s tree view of results, you can choose to either include or exclude folders from search results.
  • Markdown update prevents broken links: Markdown now automatically updates links and images when the files are changed in the VS Code Explorer. Additionally, it is now easier to insert links with the new insert link commands for Markdown.
  • UI changes: The user interface receives a new look with rounded edges on input UI and new codicons in the list view. Branch creation improvements: For GitHub and Azure repos, when you commit to a protected branch, VS Studio Code will now notify you if the current branch is protected.
  • Assorted bug fixes
  • Performance optimizations for input latency

Feature previews

Programmers who are interested in testing out new features while they are still in a preview state wish to become an early adopter should join Visual Studio Insiders. With Insiders, users get a first look at features that are not yet ready for production, but are still being worked on before they hit their final state.

This month, the Insiders build provides a preview for:

  • TypeScript 4.9 support
  • Support for adding multiple Settings Profiles. This commonly requested feature may be helpful in educational environments and will also programming language-specific.
