Observability and expanded ecosystem capture analysts’ attention at CrowdStrike's Fal.Con

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. has built its reputation in providing cloud-delivered protection of endpoints, workloads, identity and data through the use of lightweight agents or sensors in a network.

This week, the company unveiled new products to drive the convergence of security and observability with a centralized log management strategy based on technology acquired through the purchase of Humio Inc. in 2021. Rebranded this week under the name of Falcon LogScale, the new offerings were designed to eliminate system blind spots and identify threats more rapidly.

“I thought the extension into observability was very interesting,” said David Nicholson (pictured, right), industry analyst for theCUBE. “Over the years, there have been times when saying your infrastructure required an agent would have been a deal killer. CrowdStrike stuck to their guns because they knew the best way to deliver what they have is through an agent in the environment, and it has proven to be the right strategy.”

Nicholson spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante (left), as part of the opening keynote analysis at Fal.Con 2022, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. Acquisition announced

To facilitate its agent-based solution, CrowdStrike has been building its portfolio through key acquisitions. In addition to Humio, it purchased zero-trust technology provider Preempt Security Inc. two years ago and added another company this week when it announced the acquisition of Reposify Inc., an external attack surface management vendor.

“They are now into observability,” Vellante said. “They’ve got the data platform. They just announced the acquisition of another company. How do you keep an agent lightweight and still support these other capabilities? In order to be a generational company, you have to have a strong ecosystem.”

CrowdStrike Chief Executive Officer George Kurtz has publicly expressed concern over the growth of disinformation campaigns through social media. The topic was raised again during Fal.Con presentations on Tuesday.

“One subject that came up during the keynote was the idea of security for elections, extending into the realm of misinformation and disinformation,” Nicholson said. “Let’s have a standard for exposing where the information is coming from. It will be very interesting to see how security works its way into that realm in the future.”
