The /now page movement

2015-10-21

People often ask me what I’m doing now.

Each time I would type out a reply, describing where I’m at, what I’m focused on, and what I’m not.

So earlier this year I added a /now page to my site: sive.rs/now

A simple link. Easy to remember. Easy to type.

It’s a nice reminder for myself, when I’m feeling unfocused. A public declaration of priorities.

(If I’m doing something that’s not on my list, is it something I want to add, or something I want to stop?)

It helps me say no, too. When I decline invitations, I point them to that page to let them know it’s not personal.

Anyway, today the brilliant Gregory Brown announced that he added a /now page to his site!

I re-tweeted his announcement, and within hours, 8 more people made a /now page!

I love it! I wish everyone had one!

If you make a /now page on your site, please add the URL in the body of a comment, below. Use the full http:// URL, so it will be a clickable link.

Update: all /now pages listed at nownownow.com

(You do get what’s going on here, don’t you? Gregory Brown has started a movement!) ☺

Great idea! Kind of like a New Years resolution, but with an acountability factor?

  2. Greg (2015-10-21) #

I like the other Greg's comment. That wasn't me, was it?

Anyway, I made a /now page too. Good for reflection, imo.

    Thanks!!!! Great idea

One could try being so wholly engaged in actually DOING what one was doing (now), that it would be obvious to those asking what that 'doing' was. Also - those who are busy 'doing' are commonly too mobile, too enthused, too 'in the moment' to be got at by those wishing to know? 'Sounds hornery..? Don't mean to be.... but if you have time to create a page, are you really 'doing' the thing you're supposedly busy 'doing'?

Not sure this is a good idea. Someone with an opportunity may look at it and never offer because, well, he's too busy. I want to always leave the door open.

Just added (okay just started to add) a /now page. http://xxaxx.com/now

Wanted to share a fun trick for google search

If you'd like to search for others participating in the /now trend try a google search of the following form.

    ".com/now" OR ".org/now"

You'll have to add an expression for any favorite domain extensions. Still poking around looking for a more inclusive search formula (other than OR-ing every single extesion)
Interesting tip! I didn't know you could Google for partial URLs like that. Thanks Claude! — Derek

  17. Lena (2015-10-21) #

    I love it, Derek. :D

    Thank you so much.

I'm working on using MANY more Enlightened No's these days... just finished reading Jeff Olson's The Slight Edge, and am onto The War of Art by Steven Pressfield... so much support for people wanting to reach their full potential. It means a lot to hear more stories of that commitment and dedication to Self.

As always, you are an inspiration. xo.

Now: I notice acting in the past (or the future) is quite a challenge. Also, I notice that speaking and writing in Subejct-Verb-Object-present tense tends to clarify my thinking, keeping action in the now, instead of the nonexistent future and/or past. Nice one Derek.

What happened with the biking? When I think about you I imagine you with a bicycle below, like a "satyr" :), but that's not in your /now page.
Living in Wellington New Zealand now, which is all winding roads with no bike lanes. After my dear friend was killed on his bike, I avoid sharing the road with cars. So, no biking lately. — Derek

Thanks Derek..I took a moment and looked at now links of the 8 people listed above. I learned something new..as always Derek..
I was a customer/artist on CDbaby back in 2000 and followed you off and on and now check in more when i get my e mail update. Thanks Derek, with all the crap on the net it is refreshing to come back to you and see the good out there. To think clearly..
Getting my site re organized is on my now list.. i pay for the hosting and it sits there. i am a writer musician and I am not using the tools to put my ideas out there. Focus.. but as Garrick pointed out we only have about 6 hours a day for focused energy to complete tasks outside of the the daily living, and if you are the person who keeps up the house, traditionally the woman, you have even less time for work, craft, art and community. It is all so very existential...

I think this is a brilliant idea, but, right now the personal web site is not at the top have of the list. So, in the spirit of saying 'No', I am adding to the list, but maintaining focus on what is at the top.

I like it for you and others who attract a lot of curious admirers. For the average person (define that how you like) social media takes care of what's happening now. For myself, 95%of the time, people I'd like to get an email reply from won't do so. (And that's one of the reasons I admire you). So, a now page for me will get even less attention than the 15 people who liked my latest (and greatest) Instagram photo.

Love it. One question, though: many people have a "News" page on their personal websites, is the "Now" proposal a replacement for the oddly impersonal/presumptuous idea of a person's "News", or something to go alongside it?
Good question! The difference is that /news is for happenings and updates (“What's new?”), but /now is meant to be a summary of the whole. (“Where are you at in this stage of your life? What are you focused on?”) — Derek

Just an opinion. The music business is a competitive place. In that regard I, personally, don't feel it's a good idea to proclaim to the world what I am doing or not doing. There are some that feel if they announce to the world they are going to do something - like losing weight for instance - it holds them accountable. I can see that. For me, I'm results oriented and would much rather (and have) lost weight first and then the rest of the world (around me) noticed what I actually accomplished - rather than talk about it before any results have taken place. With the music world being so competitive I don't want to give away sensitive ideas to others. Some of them may be stolen. I would rather tell everyone what I have been working on (past tense) once I've finished, created, copyrighted, trademarked, etc. Then I feel it's safe to announce to the world what I - have been - up to. Thoughts?

Hey, sorry I'm different here on this one. I do think that a "Now" page can be useful at times and for some people. I share some of what is going on with me on Facebook, Instagram, and occasionally on Twitter which seems to be what most people do. I tried blogging, per-say and just don't have time for that, which to me is what a "Now" page would be, except maybe less involved, but could be as detailed or extensive as you wanted it.

For some of my customers that want to share what is going on with them on their website, I'll set up a feed (usually in a section on one side of the main page or whatever page, or even multiple pages that they want it on) from FB, T, Blog, etc. so that their website is updated automatically with that feed and they only type stuff once to share with friends and website visitors the post that come from their personal page or the business page, group, etc. If you're doing that, I don't see a need for a "Now" page, if not sure make a "Now" page or put the feed there.

For me I don't have time to share a lot of what is going on in my life in general to the world, I guess I'd rather or am just one of those that wants to be out doing instead of typing or posting whatever.

I do respect Derek and feel he has many great ideas, this one just doesn't fit me or some of my customers.

My principal led our first all school teacher meeting with your clip. Since then, I have witnessed the same process in my classroom and now give ample time to let my 5th grade students feel safe about expressing themselves and to seeing what happens. Their actions pretty much mirror your video - and I'm seeing a ripple effect within some students who are now sticking out their toes a bit into the waters of risk taking for the fun of it. A nice change to see in this generation of anxious kids!

    Heh :)
I did something similar in February at the organization where I work. I started in a new managerial role and soon realized that potential topics pile up fast, and I need some way to organize them and ALSO keep others informed.
So I created a public kanban board with a column for "backlog" (so people can see what topics I've considered and how many there are), "in progress" (so people can see what I'm working on now), and "done" where I move stuff I've finished.
So whoever wants to know what I'm doing now, they can look at the in progress column. I update it at least every two weeks. So far people have liked the idea and it's been helpful for me, too, to communicate why I can't do this or that because "hey, look at these things here and let's negotiate".

  201. Virginia Wagner (2015-11-11) #

You are so inspiring, Derek. I'm going to update my site and add a now page. I've been lax in keeping up with my personal pages, with the exception of my blog: A Light Beyond the Hedge. My music site has gathered cobwebs because of family commitments and managing my depression and anxiety, while working full-time as a writer for a marketing agency and zooming all over the US doing that.

I know that you've had some personal challenges, as well, Derek, so I hope you are in a peaceful place. With success comes hoards of coat-tail riders. Don't let them drag you down. Just take off the coat every so often and free yourself.

Thank you, Derek, for sharing your ideas. You're one of a kind and your ideas are always valuable. While I don't have a personal website, your suggestion has given me the idea to paste in my business URL (redtwist.org) into my personal correspondence, thus outlining the projects on which I am working at any given time, which is typically producing two shows: our own mainstage show, and a guest company show, ie, we have begun to host/mentor upstart theatre companies with talented young artists who suggest worthy projects. This has been an absolute joy and a total win-win, and the idea is due in part to your philosophy of giving back, which is always evident in your ideas. All the best to you, sir!

  225. Jim DeLaHunt (2015-11-20) #

I like the idea of a /now page, but it assumes an English-only, monolingual website.

The word "now" is in English; if my site was in German that might be /jetzt or /aktuell, in Japanese it might be /ただ今 or something like that. Or an non-English site might use the English word for the URL, for brevity.

In a multilingual website, a common convention is to use the root of the URL path to indicate language. The English-language about page is at /en/about_us, the German-language about page is at /de/ueberuns, etc.

Thus, it would be interesting to develop a machine-readable convention that says, "the now page for english is at /en/now", "the now page for German is at /de/aktuell" etc.
The page can be called anything. This is not machine-read. It's not just looking for any site with "/now" in its URL. This is a very hand-made collection of personal sites that have created a page to say what they're working on now. Any language and any URL is fine. /ただ今 or /qzwxkvuyv — Derek

Once again, I have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about--any of you--BUT, if my guess is correct, as far as I know, no one has ever been interested in what I am doing, either now or ever... or has gotten in the way of me doing it. And, I much prefer it that way.

It occurred to me in the last few months that this concept is critically absent from the internet landscape, especially where flipping email only customer service dominates.

The problem with this implementation is the last updates to these "now" pages are already days & weeks old.

What we need, are applications which which point to where we are NOW so that when goals overlap we can waste far less time in getting to a collaboration point.

blab.im schedule, twitter feeds, active/realtime rss..

Shortening the distance between customers & owners/business/entrepreneurs/&individuals from the virtual equivalent of TRADING HAND TYPED POST-IT-NOTES, to something along the lines of, hey, let's get something DONE; this is what i'm up to lately, here's where our goals overlap, *here I am RIGHT NOW*, let's trade the best of our realtime insights.

I finally got around to creating mine – this is a family blog, I've listed what we're doing as a family, and individually: http://pearceonearth.com/now

As I've made a couple updates to it, though, I've thought it would be nice to have an archive of past updates, so I can see what we were doing on different dates. I'm not sure of an easy way to automate this with Wordpress, so when I make a major change, I'm considering moving the existing now page to "/now-[date]" and maybe keeping a list of them at the bottom of the current /now page for reference. If you have any other ideas for how to do this, I'd love to hear them.

I have spent the last 14 years of my life trying to perfect the tracking of my thoughts and what I am doing now. It has only been recent that I have made a website dedicated to what I'm doing now.

Thank you for sharing the video and TED talk about first Followers. It was inspiring. It lines up really well with a study I have been doing for a few year on social and being yourself in a group.

You may find this interesting, I have found there are 5 types of being in a group. There is the speaker, Wingman, Organizer, Wallflowers, and Outcasts. What you see in the video is a speaker, speaking his language through dance. He is expressing his excitement for something. The first person who joins him is a wingman, someone who excepts the excitement from the speaker, connects on the same level and adds to that positive energy. Together they build the energy and confidence of that space. The next two people who come up and convince their friends to join would be a type of organiser because they have a following of people that value their opinions and actions.

You are applying the same concept by lining up your values or goals with others and sharing them here. You would be considered a speaker (or content creator because this is online) and Organizer because you bring people together, They connect with you on a deep level and add to the movement.

    Something to think about.

My study is more through the lens of being social, connecting, and building relationships. It appears you study a broad view of movement in crowds of people. If you are interested I would enjoy hearing your thoughts and input about movements.

I need to get to bed.

    Cheers

    Jason Rogers

This does not resonate with me. And I feel bland compared to all those exciting folks on the now page.

I suppose that to others, as regards my appearance and personality, I am not boring, yet in a way I am.
Derek points out in his other now post that your page can be for a friend you haven't seen in a year.

My problem is that I would tell a friend stuff that I fear would be too boring or too personal for a non friend.

I spend happy hours writing fiction that won't see the light of day yet, and hours on nonfiction essays for my blog. These hours and topics to me are just too personal/boring for the average person. I never tell people the title of what I'm working on.

My blog does have followers, but they are nearly all people I know in real life.

I guess I don't trust strangers to be positive. I will think more on this.

  340. Stucky (2017-11-28) #

This is immensely useful for me for several reasons. First, it helps me avoid the narcissism-hole that social media can become. Second, it keeps me grounded on the "next steps" for any project I aspire towards instead of a hundred fantasies without any production.

I set up my NOW page this week and I just saw the advantage when someone asked me attended an event I didn't want to go... I showed her my NOW page and told her those are my priorities and unfortunately I can't go.
    Perfect idea! Thanks Derek!

    Hey Derek!!!
I love the idea of a Now page. Just published mine.
Thanks for sharing this simple tool to clearly and concisely explain to Peeps what the heck I'm doing. :) Its a a really kool personal touch to stay engaged with people in between the breaks I take on social media, or from the blog.

    Stumbled upon this!

    I think this is great!

Great for accountability and to take action, fail, fail public.

I only have medium.com publication right now, but I nevertheless added a "now" page.

    Hi Derek,

This may seem a silly question, but do you suggest Now pages are best for individual service based websites? I have a product ecommerce site and wondered if it would be applicable for this type of website? Obviously not to give away trade secrets but to let customers know categories we are working on or social initiatives or even team workshops etc?

    Regards
    Stephanie
They're best for personal sites. But if your clients often want to know what's new with you, a /now page would be good for that, too. — Derek
