Tesla August Sales beat 40,000 in China
September 9, 2021 2:08 amTesla in August sold 44,264 China-made vehicles, including 31,379 for export, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said on Wednesday.
Details: The figure is an increase of 34% compared to July alone, and an increase of 275% compared to the same period last year, said CPCA.
The company, which makes Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, exported 31,379 units in August, up 29% from the previous month.
The export volume of China-made Tesla has been rising rapidly. Prior to this, the export volume of Shanghai Gigafactory in July jumped from 5,017 units in June to 24,347 units, while sales in China fell to 8,621 units, a drop of nearly 70% from June.
The company said the Shanghai plant is designed to manufacture over 450,000 cars per year.
Context: During Tesla’s Q2 2021 results in July, the US automaker said that it is making Gigafactory Shanghai its “new primary vehicle export hub”, due to global average cost optimization.
The US automaker started exporting the China-made Model 3 in October last year and plans to deliver the China-made Model Y SUV to Europe in the third quarter of 2021.
