Chinese regulators summon gaming firms including Tencent, NetEase

Chinese regulators on Tuesday summon gaming firms including Tencent and NetEase, asking them to be responsible for protecting the physical and mental health of minors.

Details: The regulators requires game companies to take measures, such as limiting the time that minors can use video games to protect their physical and mental health.

Companies should strengthen the censorship of online game content, resist unfair competition and monopoly, curb "money-led" and "traffic-led" marketing, and tighten the management of video game livestreaming, said the regulators.

The summon was led by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Other regulatory agencies including the Cyberspace Administration of China and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism also participated.

Context: Last week China's regulator announced a new set of tighter regulations over the country’s games industry, including limiting the number of hours that minors can play. 

The rules, published by the NPPA, said users under the age of 18 will only be able to play games from 8 pm to 9 pm local time on Fridays, weekends and holidays.
