俄罗斯为期四年的全球体育禁赛令被减半，此举将会影响参加未来两届奥运会的运动员，但也可能结束该国政府支持的兴奋剂丑闻带来的长期影响。位于瑞士的国际体育仲裁法庭(CAS)裁定，维持世界反兴奋剂机构(WADA)对俄罗斯实施的广泛制裁。然而，该法庭还决定将原来的四年禁赛期缩短为两年。这一决定意味着，尽管一些俄罗斯运动员将获准参加大型体育赛事，但他们只能以“中立运动员”身份参赛，禁止升俄罗斯国旗和奏俄罗斯国歌。这一裁决涵盖即将举行的两届奥运会——定于明年在东京举行的夏季奥运会和 2022 年在北京举行的冬季奥运会——以及其他大型体育赛事，如 2022 年卡塔尔世界杯足球赛。在禁令期间，俄罗斯也将被禁止申办全球体育赛事。
