VIDEO Interview: Aaron Bugal explains the Sophos 2021 Threat Report

2020 has shown us that we live in a very uncertain world, and with cybercriminals upping their game to devastating new levels this year, the world needs reliable cybersecurity more than ever - so what can we expect in 2021?

Sophos. The company has been producing security products for more than 30 years. The company reminds us that it "secures the networks used by 100 million people in 150 countries", protecting more than 400,000 organisations of all sizes.

Back in mid-October 2020, we published an article from Sophos entitled "Organisations are never the same after being hit by ransomware, according to Sophos global survey", which explained that the confidence of IT managers and their approach to battling cyberattacks was vastly different between those who've been impacted by ransomware and those who haven't.

That's important, because over the last week of headlines at iTWire, it seems there's a new report of yet another massive, major company being attacked by ransomware, along with predictions that 2021 will be the year of extortion, as ransomware writers think up even more ways to exfiltrate money, along with valuable data.

So, given Sophos published its latest 2021 Threat Report, a detailed, 36-page PDF report, which is available for free download, we thought it a good idea to chat with Aaron Bugal, the Global Cyber Security Solutions Enabler at Sophos for more information!

The interview with Aaron is embedded below, but the report is certainly interesting and alarming reading.

Not only will remote working continue to expand, but hackers have been using this new reality to take advantage of new attack vectors that have appeared due to workforce decentralisation and evolution.

The report covers the future of ransomware, the everyday threats that enterprises face, the reality that COVID-19 has become a force multiplier for attacks, the dangers of threats via non-traditional platforms, how cyber criminals are abusing security tools and plenty more.

I asked why companies are still being infected by ransomware and how Sophos handles this growing threat, and we had a discussion around that.

We then looked to the future and what the cybersecurity landscape might look like in 2030, followed by great advice that Aaron has received in life, and his final message to iTWire viewers and readers, and to Sophos' current and future customers and partners.
