Global payment solutions provider Mastercard has worked with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Road to enable contactless payments on the Gold Coast Light Rail network as part of a new smart ticketing solution.

A statement from Mastercard said this meant travellers on the network could use debit and credit cards or mobile wallets to pay for trips.

"Mastercard has worked closely with the Department of TMR Queensland on upgrading its network and is pleased to be a leading payment network within the initial trial demonstrating this innovative technology on the Gold Coast Light Rail," said Mike Rowe, vice-president, Acceptance Products, Mastercard.

"The launch is a significant step towards a more seamless experience for the people of Queensland and its visitors who can now simply tap their Mastercard card/wallet and receive an adult fare. Mastercard looks forward to continuing the partnership with the department and future expansion in 2021."

The ongoing trial is the first phase of an upgrade that will roll out smart ticketing across south-east Queensland and 18 regional and urban centres by the end of 2022.

"Around the world, Mastercard continues to combine data-driven insights with innovative technology to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable," said Rowe.

"Mastercard believes that these insights can help government bodies better understand how to make cities more efficient."

Now’s the Time for 400G Migration

The optical fibre community is anxiously awaiting the benefits that 400G capacity per wavelength will bring to existing and future fibre optic networks.

Nearly every business wants to leverage the latest in digital offerings to remain competitive in their respective markets and to provide support for fast and ever-increasing demands for data capacity. 400G is the answer.

Initial challenges are associated with supporting such project and upgrades to fulfil the promise of higher-capacity transport.

The foundation of optical networking infrastructure includes coherent optical transceivers and digital signal processing (DSP), mux/demux, ROADM, and optical amplifiers, all of which must be able to support 400G capacity.

With today’s proprietary power-hungry and high cost transceivers and DSP, how is migration to 400G networks going to be a viable option?

PacketLight's next-generation standardised solutions may be the answer. Click below to read the full article.
