Gridless, a company backed by Jack Dorsey (X founder), is pioneering a new era of Bitcoin (BTC) mining in Africa by harnessing the power of geothermal, hydro, and solar energy.

At one of Gridless’s six sites across Kenya, Malawi, and Zambia, CNBC reports that the innovative use of clean energy to power BTC mines. Eric Herstmann, a Nairobi-based miner and Gridless operator, reveals the company’s geothermal and solar power utilization at a site near Lake Naivasha. By repurposing waste energy from geothermal power sites and integrating solar panels, Gridless ensures efficient energy usage while minimizing environmental impact.

Renewable Energy Powers BTC Mining in Africa

Africa boasts vast renewable energy potential, including 10 terawatts of solar capacity and 350 gigawatts of hydro capacity. Accordingly, Gridless aims to leverage renewable energy sources to power Bitcoin mining operations, thereby unlocking economic opportunities and electrifying rural communities.

Even though BTC mining traditionally consumes substantial electricity, Gridless demonstrates that BTC mining can complement renewable energy infrastructure by absorbing excess energy during off-peak hours.

This synergy creates a financial incentive for renewable energy buildout and enhances the economics of power production. Despite criticisms of BTC mining’s energy consumption, Gridless exemplifies how BTC mining can catalyze renewable energy development.

Transforming Communities

By co-locating with renewable energy sources, BTC miners contribute to the viability of renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, Gridless’s impact extends beyond BTC mining.

In Kenya, their pilot sites have facilitated a drop in electricity prices from 35 to 25 cents per kilowatt-hour, benefiting energy suppliers and consumers. Additionally, Gridless’s initiatives have facilitated the deployment of containerized cold storage for local farmers, battery charging stations for electric motorcycles, and public Wi-Fi points for several rural communities.

Gridless’s innovative approach to BTC mining demonstrates the transformative potential of clean energy in Africa. With BTC miners reaping more benefits by optimizing their operations, Gridless is bound to experience similar benefits by implementing its innovative mining operations across Africa.
