What is SAP BTP?

SAP Cloud Platform has been rebranded as SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). SAP Cloud Platform (SCP) was a platform as a service developed by SAP SE for creating new applications or extending existing applications in a secure cloud computing environment managed by SAP. SAP BTP is designed to help businesses build, run, and extend applications in a cloud-native environment.

SAP Business Technology Platform is an innovation platform optimized for SAP applications in the cloud. SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) brings together application development and automation, data and analytics, integration, and AI capabilities in one unified environment. The platform offers users the ability to turn data into business value, compose end-to-end business processes, and build and extend SAP applications quickly.

SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) is a unified, business-centric, and open platform for the entire SAP ecosystem. It is available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and enables users to integrate and create value from data and extend their SAP and third-party solution landscapes to meet evolving business needs.

Overview:

SAP Cloud Platform was an open platform-as-a-service, which included the in-memory SAP HANA database management system, connects to both on-premises and cloud-based systems running SAP or other third-party software and relies on open standards, like Java, JavaScript, Node.js and Cloud Foundry for integration options.

SAP and Apple Inc. partnered to develop mobile applications on iOS using cloud-based software development kits (SDKs) for the SAP Cloud Platform.

SAP Cloud Platform was based on open-source technology, developed & supported in partnership with SUSE.

The company worked with the Cloud Foundry Foundation for an offering of SAP Cloud Platform that enabled customers to test out and give feedback for the functionalities coming with Cloud Foundry.

History:

Initially unveiled as SAP NetWeaver Cloud belonging to the SAP HANA Cloud portfolio on October 16, 2012 the cloud platform was reintroduced with the new name SAP HANA Cloud Platform on May 13, 2013 as the foundation for SAP cloud products, including the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud. Adoption of the SAP HANA Cloud Platform has increased steadily since the platform’s launch in 2012, with SAP claiming over 4000 customers and 500 partners adopting the SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

On February 27, 2017, SAP HANA Cloud Platform was renamed SAP Cloud Platform at the Mobile World Congress.

On January 18, 2021, SAP Cloud Platform was officially removed from SAP’s product portfolio to support SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

Benefits:

Some applications were available from the SAP HANA App Centre (now merged with the SAP Store), to extend and integrate applications, customize existing applications, and extend their mobile footprint with mobile-first apps. With SAP Cloud Platform developers could build applications which run in the cloud, but still access data from the premises or other clouds.

SAP Cloud Platform, developer edition offered users a way to explore SAP Cloud Platform and its capabilities. In addition to 1GB shared SAP HANA, SAP Cloud Platform provides users to:

  • Create column views using both HANA Studio and SQLcommands via JDBC
  • Connect to the HANA instance on SAP Cloud Platform easily via Eclipse
  • Deploy the apps on Cloud Foundry based runtimes and backing services.
  • Connect to up to 2 on-premises systems.
  • Create unlimited HTML
  • Test drive the Java

Solutions & Services:

Solutions:

SAP BTP offers fast in-memory processing, sustainable, agile solutions and services to integrate data and extend applications, and fully embedded analytics and intelligent technologies.

Services:

Services enable, facilitate, or accelerate the development of business applications and other platform services on SAP BTP. Services are grouped into the following service types:

  • Business services: Services that enable, facilitate, or accelerate the development of business process components or provide industry-specific functionalities or content within a business application.
  • Technical services: Services that enable, facilitate, or accelerate the development of general or domain independent content within a business application, independent of the application’s business process or task.

Getting Started:

SAP BTP offers two types of global accounts: Trial accounts (completely free of charge) and enterprise accounts. Within an enterprise account, you can use both free and paid plans.

global account is the realization of a contract you or your company has made with SAP. A global account is used to manage subaccounts, members, entitlements and quotas. You receive entitlements and quotas to use platform resources per global account and then distribute the entitlements and quotas to the subaccount for actual consumption. There are two types of commercial models for global accounts: consumption-based model and subscription-based model.

free trial account is intended for individuals, for example students, who want to explore SAP BTP for free. It is an isolated account and subaccount, with pre-allocated service entitlements that can be used for a limited number of days.

Free tier is not an account type, but it’s a set of free services that can be used within an enterprise account.

To use an enterprise account, you can either purchase a customer account, join the partner program to purchase a partner account, or self-register for an enterprise account to try out free tier service plans.

SAP BTP Vs SAP S4 HANA:

SAP BTP SAP HANA
With SAP BTP, developers can build custom applications that run on various cloud providers, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. With SAP HANA Cloud, developers can build new applications or extend existing ones by leveraging the power of HANA’s in-memory database technology.
It is ideal for businesses seeking to create custom applications, optimize business processes through integration, harness the power of data analytics, and embrace innovations like IoT and machine learning SAP HANA is particularly well-suited for organizations in need of cloud-based data storage and processing with an emphasis on in-memory capabilities. It is a valuable choice when advanced analytics on the stored data is a priority.
SAP BTP provides a vast array of services and tools beyond database capabilities. These include SAP Cloud Platform for application development, analytics services, IoT services, machine learning tools, and more. It is more narrowly focused, concentrating primarily on providing a cloud-based database service. While it includes analytics capabilities, it does not offer the extensive range of services and tools that SAP BTP provides.
SAP BTP supports data storage as part of its broader functionality, with a primary focus on enabling application development and data integration. SAP HANA Cloud, however, is designed primarily as a cloud-based data storage and processing solution, with a strong emphasis on in-memory database technology, leveraging SAP HANA.
It provides flexibility in choosing different database options within the platform to meet specific application requirements. SAP HANA Cloud is centred around SAP HANA, an in-memory database platform that has been optimized for cloud usage.
SAP BTP incorporates analytics and machine learning services as integral components of the platform. It includes built-in support for advanced analytics and machine learning on data stored within the database.
