ChatGPT’s traffic drops for the first time since launch

According to Similarweb, ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced a decline in monthly website traffic and unique visitors in June.

Compared to May, global desktop and mobile traffic to the ChatGPT website decreased by 9.7%, while unique visitors dropped by 5.7%. Additionally, the data showed that visitors spent 8.5% less time on the website.

David Carr, Senior Insights Manager at Similarweb, attributed the decrease in traffic to the chatbot's novelty wearing off.

ChatGPT gained significant popularity, with people using it for a wide range of daily tasks such as writing and coding. Just two months after its launch, the chatbot reached 100 million monthly active users in January, making it the fastest-growing consumer application. It garnered over 1.5 billion monthly visits and ranked among the top 20 websites worldwide.

In recent months, several competitors, including Google's Bard chatbot, have entered the market. Microsoft's Bing search engine also offers a chatbot powered by OpenAI to users for free.

Despite the decline, ChatGPT remains the most visited website offering an AI-powered chatbot. It receives more traffic worldwide than Microsoft's BingChat.

Google's Bard chatbot ranks below the top three in Similarweb's rankings, coming just after character.ai, a startup that enables users to design and develop their own chatbots.
