hi brettroth do i just fastboot boot this file img will this have all the file names normal, but then what twrp zip do i install :/
When I flash this twrp.img, I can't permanently install twrp from the zip because the internal storage is encrypted.

This zip should decrypt on a11. If not let me know I have others I know one of them works.

I just installed via sideload and my internal storage is still encrypted.

Try this one lol. I am on a13 and this decrypts. I don't wanna go back and test things but I'm pretty sure there was a twrp that decrypted a11. A12 and 13 works no prob

I asking because Siddik's version (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-11-12-13-unofficial-twrp-for-oneplus-6-6t.4382121/)
stopped decrypting since this one

I'm looking for help recovering from my own stupidity. I was planning to update the LineageOS on my phone. It also has/had Lineage Recovery installed. I wanted to make a backup using TWRP and for that I wanted to boot briefly into TWRP's recovery.

I tried booting TWRP using fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-fajita.img.

Sending the image went through, but booting failed with FAILED (remote: 'Unrecognized command boot').

So, I decided to flash the image instead with fastboot flash boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-fajita.img. That worked. But after rebooting an error was shown. Something like "init exited". I didn't take a note. I rebooted again, expecting it to fall back to the other partition. But it didn't. Same error was shown again.

Finally, I attempted to reboot into recovery, holding VOL DOWN + POWER. The phone/screen would turn off, but it wouldn't reboot at all. Now it doesn't show any sign of activity no matter what buttons I use to try to boot it.

Have I successfully bricked my phone? Or is there something else I could try? I'm hoping for the latter.

UPDATE:

I managed to start the phone with VOL UP + POWER (holding for an unusual long time). The error message reads:

QUALCOMM CrashDump Mode ----------------------- Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x0000000b complete_and_exit

Lesson learned: don't flash a recovery img that doesn't boot. Have you managed to send fastboot commands to the device? If at all possible, flash another TWRP version. Otherwise, try this Msm tool (for T-Mobile, use this one instead).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "a recovery img that doesn't boot". Is that what the FAILED (remote: 'Unrecognized command boot') was trying to tell me? That the image cannot be booted? That would indeed be a hard learned lesson.

In CrashDump Mode fastboot appears not to be enabled. I see the device being recognized by the kernel with different vendor and device id when connecting USB. But fastboot devices doesn't list any device. The described VOL UP + VOL DOWN + POWER to enter fastboot has so far been unsuccessful.

Should I be able to get into fastboot, I could go back to flashing Lineage Recovery image or an older version of TWRP (provided that works. Or maybe switch the device to the other slot?
But, if not, it will have to be MSM Download Tool. Gotta find me a Windows Box first. Or is there a Linux alternative for / port of the tool?

Anyway, thanks for your reply. I'll keep looking, carefully trying things out. I'll keep ya posted on how things unfold.

Yes, that would've been the cue for me to try another image.

Actually, yeah, fastboot should still work but things can go wrong I guess. That's the entire idea: when the recovery partition gets corrupted it should be possible to flash another one via fastboot. You may need to flash an official 1+ image first. Not sure how you'd switch partitions without fastboot. I'm afraid msm only works in Windows, nothing a VM can't handle.

All right. I made some progress. I'm able to boot into recovery mode and I'm also able to boot into fastboot/bootloader. Not sure why that failed earlier. But it works now and there's hope.

I think I know where I took a wrong turn earlier. In recovery mode there's an option in the menu "Enter fastboot". I believe that's what I did before. I'm unsure what exact mode the phone enters using that option. I probably have to ask the LineageOS folks. Anyway, in that mode I'm unable to boot a recovery image using fastboot boot, no matter what recovery image I choose. The second step will always fail with 'Unrecognized command boot'.

The option below in the "Advanced options" menu of Recovery reads "Reboot to bootloader". Selecting that, the phone will reboot into "FastBoot Mode". Now the device is listed using fastboot devices and I can use fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-fajita.img. The image is sent to the device and the device reboots, but, after rebooting, the same error (Attempted to kill init!) is shown. That always happens no matter what TWRP recovery image I try.

In recovery, I'm being told: "Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupted. ...".

I'm trying to understand the meaning and impact of all that. As mentioned above, before all went pear shaped, I flashed the TWRP recovery image to boot. Slot b was active at the time, iirc. I assume that command would only affect the boot partition and maybe other partitions involved in booting, but shouldn't touch the system or data partitions. So, how do I proceed from here to get back to a functioning device or at least some recovery, that allows me to take a backup of the data partition? That would save me a lot of time even if I have to reset and start over in the end.

After a good night's sleep, I managed to pull myself out of this mess this morning.

I flashed the LineageOS boot.img to boot_b, the slot that was active when I previously attempted to flash TWRP. After that rebooted into recovery, which still complained about possible data corruption, hit the retry button and my phone booted back into the OS. 😅

I'm not sure which slot it is using now, but I'll leave that for another time to investigate. Gotta get other stuff done first. Thanks for looking over my shoulder @Timmmmaaahh!

I have Lineage installed on my OnePlus 6T but had to root it. I want to unroot it so I can use apps that won't run on a rooted device. I understand that I need to install TWRP recovery then use Magisk. I can Fastboot install TWRP but when I restart the phone in recovery it reverts to the previous recovery. Any idea why? Alternatively, can anyone give better instructions to unroot?
Best way to unroot is to go stock(OOS) using MSM tool. However if you wanna stick to lineage os, then just remove magisk. However, apps now a days use advanced protocol and if you have TWRP & custom rom it can still detect as rooted. The only way to hide root and TWRP is through magisk hide, if the app still detect root with magisk then nothing can hide it.
