LG To Supply OLED TV Panels To Samsung (reuters.com) 11

South Korea's LG Display will start supplying high-end TV panels to Samsung Electronic from as early as this quarter, three sources told Reuters, in a deal that would help the loss-making flat-screen maker turn profitable. From the report:LG Display aims to supply 2 million units next year and boost shipments to 3 million and 5 million units in subsequent years, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Initial supplies to Samsung would likely be 77-inch and 83-inch white OLED (WOLED) TV panels. For Samsung, the deal highlights how it is looking to expand in high-end organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs as competition heats up in the lower end with Chinese vendors. OLED panels cost nearly five times more than liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels. With this deal, Samsung could overtake Sony as the second largest supplier of OLED TVs globally.
  • No habla TV. However, I do have a 48" OLED AORUS PC Monitor from Gigabyte. I hate the firmware, but the picture is pretty much unbeatable. I wish it was possible to still get OLED monitors at 32" still in HD rather than 4k. The newer 4k stuff is great for big monitors above 42" but below that it's tiny and you have to use an OS and desktop environment that supports scaling. I don't care for that (I want the option to run on older machines and still be readable). I'd also like to see more options at 4:3 or 1:1. I own the only 1:1 monitor I've personally ever seen, the Ezio FlexScan EV2730Q 26.5-inch display. 1920x1920 is it's native resolution but it's still a bit too small PPI-wise for my old eyes. Big, square (or 4:3) and OLED-level bright seem to be impossible but I know my desires are rare among consumers. One nice fact to know and tell is that since 4k is exactly double HD, you often do not get the "smeary" look when you run your 4K monitor at HD resolution that normally happens when you force your LCD-based monitor into a non-native resolution.

You just described every Gigabyte customer's attitude towards every product they make. Hardware is fine, if not great; the firmware / software / drivers are an absolute mess that makes using the product annoying at best, and down-right unworkable at worst.

Long ago my 1080Ti was a Gigabyte.
My only really distinctive memory of that card is how fucking bad the Gigabyte control panel software was.
        • Re:

Luckily any geforce card will work with anyone's panel, for the most part.

I used to use MSI's software with my Zotac card because it had the best overclocking interface.

          • Re:

Ya- I ended up using MSI's software as well. Much better.
      • Re:

The RGB control software for my Gigabyte motherboard is able to cause my BIOS to reset to defaults. Not bad considering the lighting function is controlled by a completely separate chip. Also every so often my fan curves just don't work anymore until a BIOS reset.

Their hardware is rock solid though.

I finally had a gigabyte board die a premature death, and sadly it was my 990FX G1 Gaming. And since I had moved to using M.2 I couldn't use my old board. But I wound up with an ASRock and the BIOS is much better than gigabyte, and they seem otherwise similar.

    • Re:

Totally agree, monitor above 42 are usually too big, i prefer dual monitor than a huge monitor!
Also, small font is stupid, even for games, HD is good enough for me (and FASTER than 4k), so please, 32'' monitors
And no, not ultra-wide, that is only useful for gamers, if i want wider monitor, i get a bigger one, that way i can also place windows in the top part

Anyway, the key point is that not everyone is a gamer, rich and wants huge monitors
