Gamification in UX Design and Influence on User Engagement

Why gamification is one of the key success factors for the app?

Once there was a cool business contacts app. The owner of such an app believed that adding gamification in such an app was something odd since managers and business people wouldn’t like playing and surprise features would seem weird to them. This app never became a legendary start-up and later on, we had to work for 2 years to include at least minimal engagement options for new people to launch the product.

At the same time, once we were working on the FinTech startup. Normally, FinTech startups were not focused on gamification features. However, this company decided to give bonuses for almost all types of actions and made a marathon with monthly competition among users who could achieve monthly bonuses for using the app. The app became loved by numerous people and keeps on growing actively.

Currently, we can see the increasing importance of gamification almost everywhere around us: gas stations offer quizzes to the clients, and leading banking systems include new gamification to achieve goals and get points for prizes and luxury clubs of users. Some apps that are not even closely related to the gaming industry include unbelievable gamification features like:

  • play in the app and win a subscription;
  • play inside the app and get bonuses to use as payment coins;
  • play inside the app and win prizes.

You definitely can see that we love prizes and everyone love unexpected pleasant surprises. Such an addiction to presents rules the world and makes us want to use those apps that have strong gamification features more and more on a daily bases. This leads to the fact, that a cool app and good UX are impossible without good gamification.
