Black Friday 2022 will happen on November 25 this year, but looking back at the past few years, we’ve noticed that retailers begin throwing out deals long before the day itself. This trend has expanded, with the sales period starting earlier and earlier. Taking a look at Adobe’s 2021 holiday shopping report (opens in new tab) showed us that computer hardware sales rose throughout November before dropping off in early December.

Should you wait for a Black Friday MacBook Pro deal? 

Black Friday is still a little ways off at this point, so you might be wondering whether it’s worth the wait to pick up a MacBook Pro. If, as discussed above, you’re in urgent need of a new laptop, then by all means see what deals you can find today. Otherwise, though, you’re better off waiting; you’re practically guaranteed to get a better deal if you wait until the early sales kick off.

This can be a dicey game; we’ll probably see some deals on MacBook Pros before Black Friday itself, and there’s a chance some retailers will blow through their stock in mid-November. Black Friday is landing on November 25 this year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see sales kick off before then. Although the bulk of price cuts will land on the day itself (and continue through the weekend to Cyber Monday), some of the best discounts could feasibly land days in advance.

Examining trends from previous years, sales on computer hardware generally begin to show up in early November, spiking in the week leading up to Thanksgiving (November 24). The week of November 21 will likely see a tonne of early discounts, so keep your eyes peeled.

What Black Friday MacBook Pro deals do we expect in 2022?

It’s hard to gauge exactly what sales we’ll see on MacBook Pros this year; even the M1 models aren’t that old, only launching in 2020. With Apple pushing its new silicon, we think it’s more likely that we’ll see big deals on older (but still very capable!) Intel-powered MacBook Pro models.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see any significant discounts on M2-powered MacBook Pros, but the M1 Pro and M1 Max models from 2021 may well enjoy some modest sales. There isn’t too much variation between models when it comes to MacBooks - unlike Windows laptops and Chromebooks - but you might see better deals on models with less storage space.

What specs should I look for when buying a MacBook Pro on Black Friday?

Unlike conventional laptops, the MacBook Pro has a relatively small pool of different models. The main three factors are screen size, processor, and storage. The newest model - which likely won’t see big sales - is the 13-inch M2 version, which can come with either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

The 14- and 16-inch models currently available pack the M1 Pro chip, with the exception of the high-end 16-inch M1 Max model (which also has double the RAM of the M1 Pro models). If you go to Apple’s website right now, you’ll be able to find a grand total of seven different MacBook Pros; that doesn’t include pre-2020 Intel models, nor the supposedly upcoming M2 Pro/M2 Max versions.

Ultimately, screen size will be the most important factor for most users, since it affects the entire size of the laptop. If you want a super-compact model that is easy to take around with you, keep your eyes out for a 2020 M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. If you’re planning on mostly keeping it plugged in at home or work, consider a 16-inch model instead.

Storage is of course key, but shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Even the lowest-end MacBook Pros still pack a minimum of 256GB in the storage department, which is plenty for most users - and there’s always the option to hook up an external hard drive if you need more space. The majority of MacBook Pro configurations have the same 512GB standard.

In November 2020, Apple released its biggest change to the 13-inch MacBook Pro in years, with its own custom M1 processor. We were a bit apprehensive at first, but have grown to love just how powerful this little chip is. This laptop will be able to get you through pretty much any workload, while being light enough to fit in your bag without giving you too much pain. It doesn't hurt that this is the MacBook Pro we expect to see the most deals on for Black Friday this year.

This is the heavy hitter. The 16-inch MacBook Pro might have the year 2019 next to it, but don't think that it's outdated. It has incredibly powerful 10th-generation Intel H-series processors and dedicated AMD graphics that will absolutely dominate whatever creative workload you throw at it, especially if you're using Apple's wide range of creative software. This is what we're expecting a new version of in late October, so we're sure some retailers will have some pretty amazing Black Friday 16-inch MacBook Pro deals.

The non-M1 13-inch MacBook Pro might not have the limelight anymore, but that doesn't mean it's a slouch. This is still an incredible thin and light laptop. The 10th-generation Intel processors are more than capable of handling pretty much anything you can throw at it, and it still has everything else that makes the MacBook Pro great. Expect to see some pretty deep discounts on this MacBook Pro for Black Friday as retailers clear out their stock.
