The September release of Visual Studio Code (version 1.72) is right on time and available to download.
Visual Studio Code 1.72 adds a long list of new features, but this release mostly focuses on smaller quality-of-life improvements that give the code editor a fresh, more modern feel and a better user experience.
Let’s have a quick look at some of the updates, its newest changes, and see what’s also available to preview in the Insiders release of VS Code.
VS Code September 2022 Updates
Some of the highlights in this release include:
- Need to access a run task entry later without having to search for it? VS Code users can now pin run task entries in the Tasks: Run Task.
- Users can hide actions in tool bars. Hidden actions can then be accessed again and re-added to the menu.
- Have you ever hit the character limit when filing an issue report and received an error message? This frustrating limit has been expanded to a whopping 7500 characters.
- For some commonly used audio and video file types (WAV, MP3, Ogg, FLAC, H.264, and VP8) there is now a built-in preview in the editor.
- The autoscroll has been improved and moves at a more user friendly speed. Helpful when scrolling through long strings of code! Additionally, the hover function in the editor has been given a quality-of-life update and is easier to use.
- The 3-way merger is now no longer the default.
- It’s now easier to keep up with new updates. Any extension that has been updated in the last week will now be shown under Updates in the Extension view.
- Thanks to the team switching to Speedy Web Compiler, pull request check are now much faster.
- Documentation for the terminal has been improved and is now available in its own section in VS Code’s documentation.
- Improved startup time
- Various bug fixes
Previewing upcoming features
Like all VS Code releases, version 1.72 adds some preview features. These are not ready to use in production and should be used with caution, but users interested in seeing what’s upcoming and testing out new features should have a look and see what the development team has been busy working on.
The biggest current feature available to preview is the addition of Settings Profiles.
The overview on the GitHub issue explains that profiles could potentially be used in “education, presentations, or can even be language specific”. This has been a commonly requested feature from the VS Code community and can be tested out by users of the VS Code Insiders release.
Work has also continued on bringing support for WebAssembly in VS Code and addressing its current issues and limitations.
