It is not the first time that we have seen DJI drones being utilized at great altitudes, but this footage of the DJI Mavic 3 flying above the peak of Mount Everest is likely to be the most impressive of them all.

The photographs and video footage that were taken using the DJI Mavic 3 are simply breathtaking. The almost three-minute video presents us with some of the most stunning views of Mount Everest and several peaks in its immediate vicinity.

Challenges of flying a DJI Mavic 3 over Mount Everest

Any kind of drone will have a far more difficult time flying at higher altitudes, where the air is thinner. A DJI Mavic drone was used a few years ago to aid in a rescue operation on K2. That particular drone featured software modifications (hacks) that allowed the propellers to spin faster, which was necessary to generate sufficient lift for the drone to fly at such an altitude.

In addition to the difficulty of flying in such thin air, there are other obstacles to conquer. For example, batteries perform poorly when the temperature is low, so they must be kept warm before the flight. During the flight, you will find that the remaining battery life is decreasing at a quicker rate. The drone can malfunction if the temperature is too low. Icing might occur, for instance, on the propeller blades.

Flying at a high altitude presents several obstacles, not all of which are immediately linked to the drone. There are several that also involve the pilot. Carrying a DJI Mavic 3 and extra batteries to the summit of Mount Everest is not a simple task, even though it may not seem like much when you first think about it. The drone operator will be required to take the drone and additional equipment to the top of the mountain.

Another thing to think about is the possibility of getting frostbite on your fingertips while flying the drone.

Lastly, you need favorable atmospheric conditions as the top of the mountain will often be in the jetstream with winds too strong to fly. In addition to piloting the drone, you must also be able to ascend the mountain.

Video of DJI Mavic 3 flying around highest point on earth

In this video, we witness how the DJI Mavic 3 takes off from 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) and simply flies around the peak of Mount Everest. The drone reaches a maximum height of 9,233 meters (30,292 feet) above sea level at one point, which is very impressive. Most helicopters can barely reach Mount Everest’s base camp. Flying this high over the highest peak on the planet demonstrates the capabilities of this foldable DJI quadcopter.

Please keep in mind that we don’t know whether this DJI Mavic 3 has been modified in any way.

In the description of the video, it says, “This is Mount Everest. The highest point on Earth. A place where describing the weather as ‘harsh’ is an understatement. Together with @8kraw_official, we developed a detailed flight plan that would allow their videographers to take the ultimate drone flight from the summit – capturing the stunning beauty of the mountain, and the surrounding views, as they’ve not been captured before.”

The stunning Drone Video was created in partnership with @8KRAW FILMS: LingChen, YuanZong Wang, Yan Xie, YouYuan Lu, SUMAN, Qian Ma, ROCKER”
