“Dad, I’m a girl. I’m trans.”

I knew my teenager had been working toward telling me something. The pattern has developed over the last couple of years: hang out in the living room at a time of day that normally brought retreat into the darkness of a bedroom. Chatter nervously — a somewhat welcome respite from the usual sullen silence or randomly fired lines from the YouTuber du jour. Pace a little, hands moving exactly the way you expect from someone who has no idea what to do with their hands. But this caught me off guard.
