Some of us grasp it all too well. He has had a habit of silencing some long-standing members of HN: yummyfajitas, mtgx, myself – for what seem to be inconsistent reasons. He also applies penalties that last for years, and people are too afraid to say anything.
I feel bad saying this, but when Dan retires, I'll feel relieved.
It's hard to overstate just how authoritarian he is, underneath that disarming personality. He reads every comment. You can't say anything without speaking to Dan, indirectly.

Its quite remarkable, the HN team is basically 24x7.

I've disagreed with dang's attitude and moderation choices before, but for the most part he does a great job at keeping HN civil, which is no easy task.

Its absolutely amazing that the quality of posts is still nearly as good as when I first joined 10 years ago. I cant think of another internet forum with that kind of success that's got HN's scale.

I read HN on a daily basis and I have never once seen such comments. Please share some evidence.
Dang is an amazing mod. HN culture is far better than any other online forum. Moderation is key to that.
Daniel is the most remarkable person I met when going through YC. I could not believe that someone could be so sweet and dedicated after years of running HN.
i find dan to be a chinese communist party shill. I've never seen anyone so sensitive to criticising the CCP. He will magically appear in any thread remotely chinese related to warn people to not start 'flame wars'
Maybe or maybe just likes Chinese-food ?
It remains one of the single best sources for good info and inspiration. Kudos to you all. I check in to it and only 2-3 more sites religiously every day.
