Maybe if they didn’t tank their trade in values a few months back (minus iPhones). When my device values dropped by half overnight they lost any chance for that and I’m someone that “upgrades” frequently.

Hm. I replaced a 10 year old MBP last year, and don’t anticipate replacing my new one for at least 5-7 years.

This is really where your otherwise reasonable post collapses. Yes, they push way too many minor updates year on year for products. But, nobody is forced to upgrade. I have an M1 Mac Mini and M1 MBA. Not upgrading to the M2 MBA, not offering enough but also the M1 is still too good. Maybe I would upgrade the MM if they put an M2 Max in it.

Skip a couple of upgrades, that is the real point. You are not being forced to do anything.

Still rocking a late 2013 13" Pro. I only use it for email, surfing, small spreadsheets, and online shopping. This MacBook has had a good run and will upgrade when it no longer does what I need it to do.

Nah, they are not. But their devices might be usable for lesser period of time.

Gone are the days when you could add more RAM and throw in faster SSD in your 2010 MBP and it was good for another several years.

We let them take this from us, so don't complain.

No they don't. Just because they make a new version every year doesn't mean you have to upgrade yearly. On the PC side Intel makes new processors yearly and most big PC makers keep up with that by updating their computers with the newest. No one expects people to buy every year. Cars are updated every year but unless you're not buying one every year.

You're looking at this the negative and IMO the wrong way. By Apple updating their products every year it means WHEN you buy you will get the latest product and it will last the longest. If Apple was slow to update and updated say every four years for example and you bought that product in year three then it's worse. You would have to buy when the new product came out to be efficient but what if you needed a Mac mid cycle.

The Apple Watch comes out yearly and I consider myself quick to upgrade stuff and I only upgrade that every two years. Some people keep it for much longer.

Certainly looks like 12-18 months. Closer to 18 now, maybe will get closer to 12 in ye future.

Don’t be surprised if it stays at 18 for a while, or the foreseeable future, or for the long haul.

Apple has always updated their devices regularly. There was a time where they seemingly lost interest in Macs completely, and almost everything was 18+ months without updates. But apparently they were just preparing for the transition away from Intel to their own processors.

They don't expect you to update every year, although you probably should if you make your money from these products. The latest and greatest models always maximise your productivity.

I think the last Intel 13" MacBook Pro really tells the tale of how bad Apple neglected the Mac if you compare it to earlier models. IMO it was pretty sad to see.

Components, chips and general hardware gets improvements on an annual basis. Every company does it. Not just Apple. Just because Apple announced the M2 Pro/Max chips in Oct doesn't mean that everyone who has the M1 Max is required to upgrade to the M2 Max.

The general recommendation is to buy the product that you need today and that will last.

An off-topic statement is that Apple is rumors to launch a subscription service [either yearly or monthly] in which you can upgrade your Mac on a yearly basis instead of paying full price.

I never really liked the Kool-Aid, but if other people like it, hey I respect their preference.

Apple used to update their Macs at least once, and sometimes even twice, a year. Annual internal spec bumps is a good thing. No one buying a brand new computer for several thousand dollars should get stuck with years old tech. Full redesigns will still probably only happen every 4-6 years.

Personally I keep my Macs for at least 4 years, some I have kept for 10 years. No idea why you would CHOOSE to upgrade every year.

Back in the 1950s GM was able to get customers to buy brand new vehicles every two years.

You seem to have a romantic view of recycling.

I think these are the kinds of reactions we get when we follow the tech news cycle too closely.

Nobody is forcing us to anything and this M2 13" Pro was clearly a dud even before the reviews, at least when looking at pricing compared to the new M2 Air.

Take a deep breath and rejoice in the fact that someone tested the machine for you so you can spend your money better.
