Question Does anyone else think THEIR S22 Ultra is a really bad phone?

How about me? I'm on my 3rd S22 Ultra (SD). I've had the 8/128 and 12/256. This phone is terrible and I regret my purchase.

It all boils down to:
  • Really crappy software, I don't understand how the samsung fanbois live with OneUI. For example, it fundamentally changes how dual SIM is handled compared to all other Android for no other reason than saMSuNg.
  • CSC, why??? I bought unlocked phones so I don't have to deal with carriers, don't give me carriers FFS. Hardware supports XYZ bands, let it support those bands without mucking with them based on which SIM is inserted. And FFS don't restart my phone if I want to swap SIMs, you don't see this in ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER.
  • Compound it with locked bootloader, can't even fix this with a rom.
  • Hardware wise, holy poodles, this thing heats up. I really feel for you exynos folks because the SD variant is already terrible.
    • Yes, I realize this is a problem with SD8G1.... which is a Samsung fab lol. Also, while other OEMs have issues, none are as bad as this phone
  • Why does the battery suck? How does the OP10P have decidedly better battery life?
The samsung fanbois can go on and on about this phone, yes it has a good zoom camera, yes it has a stylus. In a vacuum this phone is not bad. In comparison with competition and the expected performance, this phone is not a good buy. As soon as a suitable SD8+G1 device comes out in the US, I'm gone.

Exynos variant?

I feel you man. I don't know if next year's flagship will be redemptive over this year's mess, but I'm gradually swayed by iPhone's performance and battery endurance. I heard the new iPhone 14 flagship will have a cooling chamber. Honestly, I'm on my last straw, and if Samsung maintains its callous nature come next year, then I'm porting to ios not minding its almost bland nature. I'd rather experience solid fluidity back to back plus seamless sync over a throttling brick with a piss poor battery life. At least I'm paying my money's worth sort of even though these companies are greedy AF and none of these phones should cost over a thousand plus.

The title should be ''their'' not her/his.

OneUI 4.1 Skin still has numerous bugs despite an avalanche of updates. Android 12 is no cakewalk either. Combine those with a questionable GPU and user experience can be miserable!

In my experience, my SD S22 Ultra (12G) doesn't have any lag or other issues with camera, GPS, or other hardware. It's smooth as butter here.

Samsung Electronics would not confirm the actual yields of its 4-nanometer chips, but media reports in Korea put the rate at between 20 percent and 30 percent. TSMC reported yields of around 80 percent for its 5-nanometer products in 2019.

Okay their fabrication yield is not optimized, but how does that affect us? It affects the shareholders and their profits of course, but it doesn't affect me as a consumer. I don't even use the Exynos variant, but as long as Samsung has enough yield to build the phones then that's all that matters (they just have to run their fabrication process twice as many times).

Next the S10, S20, S21 and S22 were banned by Geekbench for Benchmark Manipultion. Has any other manufacturers been banned by Geekbench? None that I'm aware of.

Does this apply to the S2x Ultra and other variants or just the S2x base model? Because I used Geekbench on my S22 Ultra and it does show results from S21 Ultra, S21+, and S21 5G variants. See picture below for proof Geekbench hasn't removed these phones. You can also see from the Geekbench score that the S22 Ultra is 30% better than the S21 Ultra.
Screenshot_20220609-222548_Geekbench 5.jpg Screenshot_20220609-222555_Geekbench 5.jpg

Additionally Samsung claimed the chipset is 30% more efficient which would lead one to believe battery life would improve.

Not necessarily. You're assuming all things are held equal, but the S22 Ultra has different hardware that could use more power such as a better display or even different software optimizations.

Then Samsung touted an awe inspiring 45W Fast Charging. Turned out it barely reduced charging time at all.

In my experience, the 45W adapter chargers the phone to 60-80% in 30 mins, and full in 1 hour. It's already super fast. Any improvement is welcome but I'm not going to cry over that as it's already so fast. I would rather I save my battery life over charging it in an instant.

Yes. Of course there are days I use it more and days I use less. Battery varies with usage, but I cant remember getting less than 10h.

EDIT: Snapdragon 256 Gb

@alan_uk84 what you mean crop out usage? I posted exactly the usage.

Just got the phone about a day ago, Snapdragon 256 version after trading in my Note 20 Ultra at a significant discount. I'm not impressed with the speakers as the top one is noticeably weaker even compared to pixel 6 and the design language could be improved upn. Besides being a bit chunkier but with a newer chipset, better dex performance (one UI 4 vs 3), and camera, this doesn't feel like a significant upgrade from the note 20u. What really motivated me to trade my device is the high trade-in value for the next year or so if I decide to upgrade.
I hope the next device comes with better refinements -- sd card + headphone jack like Sony lol...

What features would make the s23 ultra a "better" device for the cost in your opinion?

Coming from the Note20 Ultra as well, the biggest upgrade appears to be data speeds on Verizon. The camera is marginally better, but everything else seems about the same. I'm happy with my 512 GB version overall, but instead of processor speed boosts, I'd rather see more efficiency and sustained performance. On very hot days, this thing can get warm and throttle. The Note20 Ultra did this too, but less often. The 16 GB RAM version of the S21 Ultra seems to run very well, so I'd like to see the return of 16 GB RAM. Also, I hope they bring back the stronger vibrate motor.

That's BS cause it includes screen on time and screen off time. Nice try - next time don't crop the pic!

I got the phone around a month back.

Performance
For the first couple of days of my usage, I felt the lag, stuttery UI, but I got the mid-may update in couple of days and the phone is running smooth since then.

Battery
I am getting 6-6.5 hours SOT per day 100 to 10%. I have limited the phone to charge to 85%, in that case I get around 5 hours.

My Question
The last 5% of the battery die within like 2-3 minutes. Is it normal on Samsung devices or for other s22U?

A 5000 mAh battery... this what Im getting with a degraded estimated 3600 mAh battery due to be replaced in a Note 10+, most of the last SOT was streaming vids. The S22U should grease this ancient relic.
Something isn't right... Sammy we got a problem and it's you.

Wtf are you talking about? The information displayed is the same in my post.

8:46 battery left at 60%. A full charge goes 14:36...
What info you think I was hiding?

Oh, you want the screen on time?
Here, yesterday it was about 9h. But i didn't got to 0%, as i said it is avout 20-30% at the end of the day.

And again, I'm not doing effort to save battery.

The value of the object is in the eyes of the beholder, its yours alone - while there maybe others with a similar experience sharing your opinion, its not universally applied to everyone...get another phone now or later and move on so to keep your sanity.

I mean, can you really perceive an app opens .000045552423 seconds slower? If you can, good for you. I have used many phones and right now I rotate between 5 phones and the s22u is a solid snappy phone.

That's all good. Most post just their SOT but your original post wasn't clear that it included screen off time. Thx for clarifying.

  • Good day all

I've been following this conversation for a while now and would like to compliment most of you for remaining so civil and respectful in this at times heated discussion. I've seen quite a few very strong opinions but I've also seen some slipping towards intolerance. Please remember that we're all people with feelings and this is still just a technical device. It's not worth fighting over because in the end we'll all go with our personal preference and whatever anyone else chooses is not yours to judge so please refrain from making things personal. Thank you for upholding a level of respect that is becoming of this community. Carry on 👍

Folks, I'm going to have to remind you to be civil and respectful. We all have different opinions, and we are all entitled to those opinions, regardless of whether others like those opinions. Remember that there is a difference between discussing bugs, faults, shortcomings, etc of particular devices or software, vs just trash talking.

The bottom line here is, you don't have to like someone else's opinion, and you're free to debate with counterpoints, but you must respect everyone's right to their opinion.

If this devolves further into trash talking and incivility, we will close the thread, and may issue infractions as necessary.

Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated.
I think this thread is really bad but the phone is good.
Ok guys, enough is enough !

The thread title just got changed in order to be more precise :
Does anyone else think THEIR S22 Ultra is a really bad phone?
So all S22U users are invited to post their experience, as asked by the OP himself. Anything else may be considered off-topic and can be automatically removed.

The thread will be locked for some hours to ensure that everybody reads this message.

Thank you all for your understanding and collaboration.

    Have a nice day.
No it wasn't because Samsung forgot its name, the SD card slot and what side the spen goes on.🤣
Samsung started losing their edge with the hump back spen lefty N20U. Fast forward to the S22U with an extra ounce of weight so you can feel the fail and see it when it breaks the display in a small drop.
Now it's just another S model. Brilliant.

Me reading your half baked rants.
