Figma’s Dylan Field will discuss evolving as a leader and why fun is an essential company value at TechCrunch Disrupt
Dubbed "the Google Docs of design" for its flexible simplicity, Figma lets teams of product, user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) designers collaborate, edit and comment on projects in real time. Enterprise design has exploded in the past 10 years, and Figma’s success in stealing the market from Adobe — the aforementioned Goliath — is just one reason we’re thrilled that Dylan Field, Figma’s co-founder and CEO will join us on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco on October 18-20. Consider this: Field was just 20 years old when he started Figma in 2012, and the product became available to the public in 2016.

Students report that crying during exams activates schools’ anti-cheat software
Students in remote classes have taken to social media to protest against some teachers’ use of anti-cheating software during exams, with some claiming that crying during exams activates them. In recent years, a growing number of teachers in the U.S. have become dependent on artificial intelligence-based tools to virtually proctor students by monitoring faces and tracking eye movements. Last month, students began to speak out after University of Kentucky professor Josef Fruehwald said in a viral TikTok video that he wouldn't trust professors that use tracking software on students.

In iOS 16, apps can trigger real-world actions hands-free
New functionality arriving in iOS 16 will enable apps to trigger real-world actions hands-free. Apple told developers today in a session hosted during the company's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) that these hands-free actions could also be triggered even if the iOS user isn't actively using the app at the time. The update, which leverages Apple's Nearby Interaction framework, could lead to some interesting use cases where the iPhone becomes a way to interact with objects in the real world, if developers and accessory makers choose to adopt the technology.

Analysis - Apple's next frontier is your car's dashboard
Apple Inc wants to power the dashboard of your next car, but first it must convince automakers they will not end up surrendering future profits to the iPhone company like the makers of flip-phone handsets. Apple on Monday gave a preview of a new generation of its CarPlay software that will migrate from its current home on the entertainment screen to power everything in front of the driver. While the move from one screen to another may seem like a small step for Apple, it's a huge leap in terms of both the technological and business engagement between the iPhone maker and the world's automakers.

GitLab-spinoff Meltano raises another $8.2M for its open source DataOps platform
Almost exactly a year ago, GitLab spun out Meltano, an ELT (extract, load, transform) service that is now setting its sights on becoming a more fully featured "DataOps" service. At the time, GitLab, which had originally built the service to improve its own data lifecycle platform, Alphabet's GV and a number of angels, invested $4.2 million in seed funding. As Meltano CEO and GitLab veteran Douwe Maan told me, the original idea behind Meltano was to build an end-to-end data platform, but then the team narrowed its focus back to ELT again between 2020 and 2021, with the Singer open source ELT tool as its core component.

Apple introduces real-time security updates for iOS and macOS
Security is a moving target, and Apple's latest security release aims to respond better to that: to keep iPhones and Macs up to date with new security fixes, it's launching Rapid Security Response, which will apply security updates to devices on the fly, outside of version updates for iOS. The feature was announced at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), and it appears to already be live in the developer beta for iOS 16 (Meaning: it's likely to be rolled out with the general release of iOS 16, too). The feature was only briefly mentioned in yesterday's keynote, but in the developer version of iOS 16, the new toggle is appearing already in the automatic updates menu under "Install System and Data Files."
