Podcasts have unequivocally become one of the most dominant forms of media consumption in recent years. Their popularity is no different within the sphere of data science. It’s no secret that it is a rather complicated field, so methods that help develop knowledge within the topic are a great choice, especially ones as easy and fun as podcasts. They are also a fantastic way to maximize the effectiveness of time spent when not working on brain-intensive tasks. Imagine you’re working out, cooking, commuting, or simply taking a short break. You can take advantage of this time to stay on top of the data science world. After all, in an area like this, where significant developments can happen monthly or even weekly, a simple way to stay immersed in the industry is critical.

Since the topics can often range anywhere between how to get a career in data science and AI, we’ve decided to categorize our top podcast choices into three parts, generic data science podcasts, career podcasts, and data analytics podcasts. Here is the complete list:

Data Science Podcasts

These podcasts cover the entirety of data science, so if you have no specific
question or topic that you wish to have answered, checking these out is highly recommended as it could help you find your own favorite data science podcast.

1) OxyCast

OxyCast remains some of the heaviest, in terms of content, podcasts on this list, so if you want to take a deep dive into what is scraping, crawling, or parsing, then this is the perfect podcast for you. The host, Augustinas Kalvis, interviews a wide range of experts, primarily focusing on the people that make up the top of the data gathering world.

2) Linear Digressions

While this podcast has come to an end, its episodes are still certainly worth a listen. Hosted by Katie Malone and Ben Jaffe, Linear Digressions focus on making the immensely popular topics of AI and ML (machine learning) into something that is easily digestible for the average listener.

Whether you’re already an expert or someone just getting into data science, gaining a more fundamental understanding of such a complex sphere is certainly valuable for both.

3) Data Framed

A bit different from the above-mentioned podcasts, Data Framed primarily focuses on interviewing data leaders.

Such an approach allows the podcast to be interesting even to someone who is less well-versed in data science as it looks at how various problems can be solved and how the field is applied in general.

4) Data Stories

While most podcasts tend to discuss a multitude of data science topics, Data Stories instead targets a particular topic - visualization.

The hosts, Enrico Bertini and Moritz Stefaner, keep the discussion to a somewhat conversational tone, making the podcast quite easy and pleasant to listen to.

Similar to Linear Digressions, it has unfortunately stopped producing episodes, but we still recommend checking it out.

5) Not So Standard Deviations

Not So Standard Deviations feature a more personalized style of the podcast as the two hosts, Roger Peng and Hilary Parker, discuss both the
industry news and their personal backgrounds, including a multitude of their own experiences of working with data

6) Data Science at Home

Machine learning is undoubtedly a complex topic. So, a podcast titled Data Science at Home hosted by Francesco Gadaleta, who aims to make ML easier to understand, is welcomed.

Interestingly this podcast offers a unique perspective in the sense that it does feature not only interviews with industry professionals but also episodes where Francesco Gadaleta discusses various topics himself.

7) Data Crunch

On the Data Crunch podcast, every episode, new discussions cover emerging technologies in all things AI and ML.

If you are curious to learn more about these topics but have them explained in an easy-to-understand way, then this podcast could be perfect for you. Guests that are data industry experts and entrepreneurs also provide further valuable insights into data science.

8) Data Skeptic

Data Skeptic - arguably one of the most well-known data science podcasts out there, hosted by Kyle Polich, who discusses a myriad of topics, ranging from AI and Machine Learning to long interviews with a variety of researchers.

Combined with a library that ranges in the hundreds of episodes, its in-depth coverage ensures that there is one for everyone.

9) The Banana Data Podcast

While most other data science podcasts often choose a portion of the industry to focus on, The Banana Data Podcast instead looks at all the trending topics and hot news.

Hosted by Triveni Gandhi and Christopher Peter Makris, this podcast is worth checking out if you’re looking for a way to stay on top of the ever-evolving nature of data science.

10) AI in Business

As the AI in Business name might suggest, this podcast is all about how AI can fit in with the business. Dan Faggella, the host of the podcast, interviews AI professionals from all slices of the industry, which allows the listeners to gain AI-specific insights that may otherwise be difficult to obtain.

Data Science Career Advice Podcasts

Unlike the previous section, these podcasts have a single unifying purpose in all of them - career advice. So, if your goal is to be employed in one of the many data science companies and wish to gain some advice, listen to the podcasts below.

11) SuperDataScience

The SuperDataScience podcast is aimed at providing career advice through a rather lighthearted theme.

Hosted by Jon Krohn, the podcast nevertheless provides a large amount of exciting information, sometimes even looking at the history of data. It has shorter yet fascinating 5-minute episodes for anyone with less time for lengthy podcasts.

12) Datacast

James Le, the host of Datacast, creates a truly unique podcast as he and his guests explore the personal journeys of multiple professionals and answer the questions “how did we get here” and “what should you do so you can be here as well.”

Like most career journeys, it’s truly interesting to see how people go from one field, such as biology, to data science.

13) Women in Data Science

Women have achieved a great deal within the industry, yet it is an unfortunate truth that they still represent a minority within data science.

As such, the Woman in Data Science podcast is dedicated to shining light on the plethora of achievements women in data science have accomplished, which is truly inspiring for any future data professional.

Professor Margaret Gerritsen of Stanford University discusses with leading
women from various parts of data science all the steps and advice a lifetime of careers have taught them.

14) Naked Data Science

It is a must-listen if you already have a greater understanding of data science or simply want to become a data analyst/scientist.

Naked Data Science specifically looks at what core skills you will need to succeed in such an industry. From helpful tools to beneficial practices, everything will be discussed.

15) Data Futurology

It is challenging to get better advice from someone who is a data science
executive, thus getting acquainted with Felipe Flores is a must, a host of Data Futurology. The podcast does focus on the usual popular topics of AI and ML, though with a twist on how to get started.

Data Analytics Podcasts

For someone who is more curious about data analytics, these are prime-time data analytics podcasts.

16) Data Science Imposters

The Data Science Imposter podcast has now existed for around five years, hosted by Antonio Borges and Jordy Estevez, looks at data science from an all-rounded perspective.

Whether that is data analytics, software engineering, or anything in between, all near and far-reaching topics have been dutifully examined.

17) Digital Analytics Power Hour

If you were to assume that most data science podcasts were rather “heavy,” you’d probably be right.

However, this is not the case for Digital Analytics Power Hour and its three hosts, Michael Helbling, Tim Wilson, and Moe Kiss.

Looking at often missed topics such as a positive data culture while still providing insightful information on data analytics and career tips is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air.

18) Partially Derivative

Similarly fashioned to Digital Analytics Power Hour, it leans on the light-hearted nature of hosting a podcast.

Filled with various stories based on personal experiences, you’ll be able to find tips and tricks about analytics or many other data science-related topics.

19) O’Reilly Data Show Podcast

Though a podcast that has now ceased to create episodes, it still offers a rich library of topics that explore themes of neural networks and analytics for time series data.

While you won’t find the most recent developments here, if you wish to examine longer-standing topics in greater depth, then the O’Reilly Data Show Podcast is worth a look.

20) In Machines We Trust

Jennifer Strong, with the MIT Technology Review, examines how AI has integrated into our daily lives on the In Machines We Trust podcast. Arguably a slightly more philosophical approach to a technical topic, it offers possible considerations that are often otherwise overlooked.
