Elon Musk is a blank canvas on which people project their fantasies. He’s a buccaneering capitalist in an era of bureaucrats, a genius inventor – like Tony Stark from Marvel’s Iron Man franchise – a philanthropist and the saviour of free speech. Or maybe he’s a subsidy junkie who’s grown fat from government contracts and tax breaks, someone who serially exaggerates his technological breakthroughs and a control freak. In fact, all these Musks are true, at least in part....
