$250K books sold. $250K to save lives.

2020-08-06

Six weeks ago I emailed my private email list with a secret link to buy my new books.

They’re not even officially released yet, but they’ve already sold over $250,000.

I made 5000 limited edition hardcover copies of each, but those have sold out now.

I’ll admit, it made me ridiculously happy to make $250,000. I was expecting way less than that, so it was a big surprise. I had a spring in my step for days.

Then I thought about what to do with the money. There’s nothing I want to buy. Should I put it in an investment account? Eh. For what purpose? I don’t want more money.

So, I decided to donate it to charity. Which charity? I want to save the most lives. So I let GiveWell decide.

Yesterday I wired the entire $250,000 to the Against Malaria Foundation. That will buy 125,000 malaria nets, protecting ~225,000 people, averting ~65,000 cases of malaria, preventing ~125 deaths.

Yeah. That’s worth doing.

Afterwards, a friend reminded me that I had just repeated my “232 sand dollars” story, so go read that if interested.

You can buy the books now, directly from me. They won’t be available anywhere else for a couple more months.

That's so awesome Derek! I love this.
I've visited many developing countries and seen the impact of mosquito carried diseases from malaria to dengue fever and zika. This will be a huge thing for so many people.
I'm also just so happy you sold so many books! I've been listening to the audio and it's really been awesome. I'm in a weird spot work-wise with projects because of the virus but I can see once we get clear of it I'll definitely be looking for the Hell Yeah projects from here out.

  20. Lani Wilson (2020-08-06) #

You are an awesome man. Please send a link so I can purchase both books.
Proud of you and so is God!!!!

  21. Patsy O'Brien (2020-08-06) #

Congratulations , Derek, on both the sales achievement and the decision.
Stories like this inspire others to be charitable, and most folks only need a nudge - when I announce to audiences that my CD sales are being donated to charity, sales numbers instantly go up - all you gotta do is put the opportunity right in front of people. I truly believe we are naturally benevolent creatures.
    Btw, thoroughly enjoying the book.

Hello Derek - I've always had this dilemma - a) giving the content I produce for free (in this case your book) so that it can impact more people and have a network effect v/s b) charge for the content and I donate it myself.. curious how you went about deciding the latter was better ?

  37. Holly (2020-08-06) #

Congrats. Waiting for your next book- how to live. :)

That's very generous and good of you, Derek.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't think about all the people suffering and dying due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We should all be pulling together against this killer virus. At the present, it is the most significant global public health threat.

I hope if you have another windfall that you want to donate to charity, you will choose to help the world survive the novel corona virus.

A cynical person unfamiliar with the history here might misinterpret this as some kind of PR stunt but luckily I'm among those that know better.
Derek has the consistency of character that so many publicly charitable people lack. This isn't some kind of isolated incident, this is just another obvious portion of the beautiful tapestry that is Derek Sivers.

Nice one! This makes me feel lazy lol. Like it's good to be content, but you could also be the one to make all the money and do something constructive with it rather wishing someone else does whatever you reckon is a good idea.

By the transitive property of philanthropy you have made me a better person.

By the direct transfer of knowledge and experience in your books, you’ve made me a better person.

The post this reminds me of is "Happy, Smart and Useful."
I mistakenly remembered one of the examples of being: A person might choose to make big money at home to buy many malaria mosquito nets rather than taking a low income job, or volunteering, with fewer nets being bought, in a country with malaria.

I guess you used that example somewhere else.

I like how you realize that malaria is a big widespread killer. I seem to recall malaria being in Europe, in lowlands in Italy, before my parents were born. Not now. In the west we don't think about malaria. ... Although I did buy a quinine drink in Geneva.

A lovely way to help people!
With so many in lock down and friends dying,
Food and water will be the next scarcity, especially when the grid goes down. Everyone should gather several months of long shelf life food and water. Now,
While there is still food in grocery stores.
Everyone should have heirloom seeds and know how to grow food.

I am halfway done with "Your Music Your People". I decided to really use it as a kind of text book instead of quickly listening over the whole book and then putting it away. I really appreciate you and your work and I am inspired by your values in life and how you act upon them.

I love that we are helping through you many many people to have a better life.
    Thanks! Have a great day!

  156. Jean Givan (2020-08-06) #

Awesome dude. Yes, you are. I will definitely get your books. And if you ever need anywhere to donate your excess. Hand raised. It could help TONS of people. Currently, I am on weight loss mission. With about 100 pounds to lose. I began about a month ago and I lost about 5 pounds. I'm thinking Covid-19. I'm thinking the subset I represent, black women. And I can reach lots of people. I am starting to broadcast my journey on Periscope @Lose2Gain. I have been getting luv from my FB peeps. But I decided to start from scratch and organically grow my audience with people I don't even know. My first post will be when I go to the track, later today, as I have for the past five weeks. I am a former Division 1 basketball player (Syracuse University). So, it is well within my capabilities to make a SIGNIFICANT comeback. Anyway, keep up the good work. And I will do the same. Oh, and if you decide you want to help me, your money will go towards setting up a website and getting the word out about what I am doing. Gotta go. Be well.

Thought I was helping you whom I like by buying your books. Which are the most entertaining audiobooks I’ve ever heard! I don’t fall asleep because you & your reader change things up & have fun, seemingly considering my POV–just like you teach!

Thanks for sharing that my contributions became doubly charitable when you passed them on. Sweet!! You singlehandedly converted your global community into a force for good. Amazingly humane, giving & loving! An exemplary example all around.

Happy to be part of the magical adventure of your helpful, fun books & beyond. Parentally you’re a super role model for your son. And us all!!

  174. Clarence Stephens Jr (2020-08-06) #

Hi Derek. You are a great man. I was one of your private members on your list for your E-book sale. I bought the book because you have been such an amazing communicator and person ever since i have known you back when you owned CD Baby. The charity contribution you just made shows only a small portion of the great person you are. Thank you for being you and thank god for giving us you. I have not read your E-book yet but planning on doing so soon. I wish that i could master using my time efficiently like yourself. That is one of the reasons that you are so successful. I remember a quote that you said/written and it will stick with me until you die. "Unquote" Life should be like a roller coaster ride, you should slide into your grave saying "wow! What a ride". Something like that but I thought to myself "how could he manage that"? You mentioned you only slept enough to stay fit/ healthy otherwise you were working on something. I sincerely hope that you are truly satisfied with your life and the things that you have accomplished because you truly have been a special human being. OK Derek. Take care my friend.
    Clarence

Great Job, Derek very happy to always support the things you do simply for the great content, but seeing you do these types of things with the money, renews in me the spirit of giving and hope for this world.

  180. Ogbevire Obogrow (2020-08-06) #

    Good day Derek Sivers,
    Kudos.
What you did is super magnanimous. The world indeed needs more people like you.
I really commend and thank you deeply for this donation which is indeed a lives- saving one.
God bless you and keep you always.

I however, have a question or two for you. I would like to know how you came about the numbers which you stated as regards the number of mosquito nets to be bought? Are the figures correct? If yes, then something major is wrong.

You are saying that you have a donation to a foundation to get mosquito nets for Malaria prone communities, who usually are the poorest amongst our societies. Given the figures above, it means that each one of such mosquito net will cost $2000 since they are getting 125000 for $250000.

Therein lies my problem. The retail cost for an insecticide treated mosquito net in Nigeria today is about N2000 (https://www.jumia.com.ng/permanet-mosquito-treated-bednet-white-universal-mpg2947.html) which is about $5.19. So at $2000 each, you have given N770,080.00 to purchase one mosquito net. Permit me to ask, how this is possible.

I hope what I wrote above is completely incorrect and that the figures you stated above are all incorrect.

I will love to hear from you about this. Kindly give a better explanation for what transpired.
If you have money for a purpose, then it should be used to serve that purpose. If that is not the case then...

    Thank you.
    Obogrow, Ogbevire O.

This is *not* criticism of the way you choose to spend your money.

Could you share your thoughts on the pros and cons of:

    A) giving x amount of money to charity right now as a one time event
    B) putting x amount of money in some type of investment vehicle and repeatedly give profits to charity?

Is that just a personal preference or does A) do "more" good than B) in practice? Without meaning to turn good deeds into a competition.

Trying to learn more about this kind of thing, not criticism.

So amazing, brought goosebumps to my skin.

I would much rather this donation be made then having a signature. Please keep yourself safe, no need to come to the US to do signatures on books. I was hoping you would might do something special instead os book signatures, like a live Q&A, yet dropped the thought thinking you would probably delight your audience in some way. Donating 250k to charity is a massively large pizza sent to us all for having a change on the signature. You rock! Thanks for being you.

    Fellow fans,
I see two or more posts about numbers and investment vehicles. Let's remember that Derek, independently wealthy, doesn't invest and probably never has. All of his posts have been for us to think for ourselves. Like when he advises music artists by using business world examples: The business stories are only metaphors, nothing more, so we can think and apply the story as suits our own situation.

To me, even numbers for nets are mere metaphors, just guesses, as different countries can have different exchange rates, supply routes, and so forth. I might instead be buying lamps, water filters or plastic pipes. It's all good.

Derek, I share your happiness, while doing my own thinking and finding inspiration from you and other commenters.

If I could help it (besides required school books), I've decided not to buy anymore physical books UNTIL I heard that you were writing these books and I couldn't resist. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity!

  260. Lalit Chawla (2020-08-07) #

Well that is a hell of a generous thing to do. You know after having a certain amount of money you don't get happiness. Happiness is contribution. I admire people who have made money and can contribute with their pocket book too. I believe Daniel Gilbert (Subling Upon Happiness) said the magic number is $120 K and then money doesn't make them happy.
People need a certain amount to I've better, and your donation does just that. It helps people at the bottom of the ladder.
    Hats off to you
    Lalit

  264. Ogbevire Obogrow (2020-08-07) #

    Good morning Derek,
My figures were absolutely wrong yesterday. I made an error in my calculations. Your figures are correct.
    Kudos again.
Thank you so much for your kindness to humanity.

This makes me so happy what you have done. I don't know show many times when l have asked others "how much money is enough". I am talking about famous stars who are worth millions then put their names on a wine or some kind of consumer product. Do you really need more money. It would be different if they were as generous with their humanity and gave to a worthy charity. Maybe some of them do. But you are so right, do you need another car, luxury items, new investments...... No. It is so freshing and yes encouraging to see someone as they say, " put or money where your mouth is". But then l knew you were always that kind of man. I thank you, if l can, for helping all those people your generosity will affect

I'm really excited about getting the book Derek. I thought that I read something about you having to move was it Greece? If so, How do you like living in Greece? I've been inspired by you every since I found out about your CDBaby baby endeavor by the way was so much better when you were running it. Anyway since way back then I've been an inspired friend/follower eager to hear about all your escapades and moves to grow and grow and get better. So inspiring to know that you were compelled to give your income to a good cause. I hope that you will one day advise the independent musician from this new era because it surely seems like a totally different time to attempt to be an musical artist/independent artist type person. Peace Love & Blessing to you and your family

Thats a really nice thing to do. I really love the ideas of charitys that help people with their income or status by helping them to start business or help with starting them off if they tend the fields. I had never heard of the one you used Derek. I will have to research them.

That's such a great thing to do. Besides malaria, mosquitoes carry dengue fever (There are 4 different strains and you are not immune to the other three, once you get one strain) which is a huge issue in Asia too.
Here in Hong Kong our musicians are really suffering as the Government has left them out of every funding initiative. Stay safe and healthY!

Bravo Derek! So wonderful to see you in action. You might remember me from the INK conference in India in December 2010. Almost ten years ago. This is a bit of what I have been doing since then. www.music4lifeinternational.org We had just started at that point. I believe you have also been in touch with friend and Music For Life Int'l board member Peter Williams. Hope we can meet sometime when travel resumes.
I'm going to buy your book(s).

I've read the 2 books I ordered and for the first time ever, I immediately said to my partner, I'm reading these again ASAP. So I'm starting Hell Yes again right away. THEN to find that you've dropped the $250K into this charity. I'm man enough to say it was goosebumps and happy tears brother.

I 100% agree with what #323 Sascha Rissling (2021-04-20) said...
