The application gets more tools in the latest update

PowerToys is an application that’s continuously evolving, and the most recent update released by Microsoft is just living proof in this regard.

As a suite of small tools to enhance the experience with Windows, PowerToys is currently at version 0.55.0, and according to Microsoft, the update brings lots of good news for users.

“The v0.55 release cycle continued our progress toward getting PowerToys ARM64 ready, fix some top issues and new utilities. Work from last month helped us enable us to upgrade the code base to .NET 5 and next month onward to .NET 6. This will provide stability and speed improvements,” it says.

The new tools in PowerToys 0.55.0

The first new tool in PowerToys 0.55.0 is a File Explorer add-on that comes down to developer files for the preview pane. Microsoft says this one brings some 150 file extensions.

The second is a mouse utility that was specifically developed by PowerToys group together with Microsoft’s developers focused on accessibility improvements.

“Crosshair over pointer via Ctrl+Alt+P. This feature was co-developed with the accessibility team at Microsoft. When the team told us about the idea and described trying to find your cursor by looking through a straw, we knew we could leverage code from the other mouse utilities to quickly enable this feature,” the software giant explains.

The third and last new utility included in this update is another File Explorer add-on that allows for STL file format thumbnail generation. Microsoft explains that a preview of an STL file should definitely come in handy given it’s a 3D file we’re talking about here, so in theory, you no longer have to open the file given you can already take a peek at what’s inside.

The new PowerToys version is already available for download, and you can use the link in the article to give it a try today.
