PUBG Maker sues Sea Group's Garena for copying battlegrounds' features

The creator of the popular game “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds “has sued mobile game developer Garena, the division of Singapore-based technology giant Sea Group, for violating PUBG’s copyrights.

The PUBG maker Krafton alleged in a court compliant that Garena’s Free Fire and Free Fire Max extensively copy numerous aspects of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, including its game structure and in-game items, equipment, and locations.

Krafton alleges Garena has earned hundreds of millions of dollars from two games sales on both the App Store and Google Play. Garena began selling the game on Google Play and the iOS App Store in 2017, the lawsuit alleges. Then, in September, Garena published Free Fire Max, another battle royale game that Krafton accusing it of violating PUBG’s copyrights.

Krafton also named Google and Apple as defendant for distributing Garena Free Fire and Garena Free Fire Max through their app stores and earning commission from the in-game sales. It also accused Google of hosting gameplay videos of the two games on Youtube, “these gameplay videos include elements that blatantly infringe Battlegrounds.”

Free Fire is available on both Google Play and iOS App store under the title Garena Free Fire Max. It amassed more than 100 million installations on Google Play while it ranked No.48 among all the shooting and adventure games on iOS App Store.

Krafton’s lawsuit does not specify the damages sought in its lawsuit, but it asked the court to block sales of the games on the app stores.
