Install Lightworks Video Editor on Ubuntu

Lightworks is a free powerful Video editing tool that runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. This application is truly free but mastering it can prove to be complex. In this guide, I’ll show you the steps to download and install  Lightworks Video Editor on Ubuntu / Debian / Linux Mint.

Lightworks has wide native format support available in any professional NLE. MXF, Quicktime and AVI containers, with almost every format you can think of importing natively without the need for transcoding, from ProRes, Avid DNxHD, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, RED R3D, DPX, AVCHD (with AC3 audio), H.264, XDCAM EX / HD 422, all on the same timeline in real-time.

Step 1: Download Lightworks Video Editor on Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Debian

Check for the latest release of Lightworks from the official Lightworks website.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install wget
wget https://cdn.lwks.com/releases/2021.3/lightworks_2021.3_r130507.deb

If you want to test latest features, download beta release.

Step 2: Install Lightworks Video Editor on Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Debian

Once the package is downloaded, install it using the command:

sudo apt install -f ./lightworks_2021.3_r130507.deb

Accept installation together with all the dependencies:

Step 3: Launch and use Lightworks Video Editor on Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Debian

A successful installation should have output similar to above. You can launch  Lightworks from the terminal or using your Desktop Application search menu.

$ lightworks

From the App Search, type “lightworks”. On initial application start, you’ll be asked to create a project.

Provide a project name, choose Framerate and optionally add Project notes.
