Gamifying Medium helps keep me motivated
I use badges, progress bars, and social influence to motivate myself against despair.
These four reasons will drive me to write on Medium:
- It will help me expand my network.
- This will make me more employable.
- Money will be earned.
- Writing skills can be improved.
As you can see, all these reasons are long-term, so you’re likely to get frustrated along the way and give up.
The first thing that catches your attention on a blogger’s profile is the number of followers, and the larger the number, the more likely you are to follow the blogger.
Initially, the number of followers grows very slowly, so we need to set some other goals that are easier to reach.
I set short-term, easy-to-attain goals instead of long-term ones to stay motivated and happy, so I use these methods:
What is gamification badge?
In gamification, badges symbolize rewards given to users after they achieve goals.

As you can see, you receive an email when your story has 10 and 50 fans on Medium.
In some ways, it counts as a badge, but as I mentioned before, I need more. Therefore, I created the following badges:

In the same way that collectors are happy to collect things, we love collecting badges.
On the other hand, as a reward for completing tasks, our bodies release endorphins such that we feel satisfied.
In Octalysis, badges are part of Development & Accomplishment. With progress bars and social influence, I give these badges a boost.
What is a Completeness meter?
A completeness meter or progress bar is a powerful persuasive design tool.

By visualizing the steps, the Completeness Meter pattern encourages users to complete sub-tasks in order to reach the final goal.
gave a very good explanation of it:What is Social influence & relatedness?
RichKids’ slogan is great because it reminds me of how desperately we need other people.
Our communication is so important that solitary confinement is a punishment for those already under punishment.
The feeling of being successful comes from the acknowledgment of our success by others.
As a result, I post my accomplishments on social media to feel successful.
