How Not to Burn Out at Work

How not to burn out in the office for programmers is one of the most difficult questions that a newbie programmer may ask. It is so because, as a programmer, it can be very frustrating to find yourself working without any type of vacation. Sure, you might get paid for your hard work during the week but once the week is done and you have not had any type of off time, you will start feeling the burnout factor. And if you do not have any type of personal or professional vacation during your work weeks, how can you justify enjoying yourself away from your loved ones?

When I was working full-time out at my job, I did not get to enjoy my free time that much. During the summer months, my free time consisted mainly of my nights on the weekends and evenings spent with my children. But in addition to spending money on my mortgage payment, car payment, and food, I also had to pay for a vacation. How much of a vacation did I actually get away from? I would estimate that I could have taken a month away from home and not spent that much money.

So, if I was learning how not to burn out in the office for programmers, it was very obvious to me that I needed to create a vacation plan for myself. How? I planned to go away on a month-long vacation right after my baby was born. I figured that I would not have any stress when away from home and that my sanity would stay intact while away from home. And I was right! The whole thing worked out very smoothly and I was able to spend the month of my baby's first year completely away from home.

Many people wonder how not to burn out at work. This often brings up the topic of planning to burn out in the "work" part of the equation, but I think it is important to spend a holiday abroad as if you were actually on vacation. You spend time off, you get time back, and you get healthy food! In other words, you can burn out in the "work" part of the vacation if you do the activities while you are there. Don't just eat vacation food while you are there!

If you want to make sure that you do not burnout in the "work" part of your career, the first thing that you need to figure out is when exactly you want to take a break. For me, I like to take vacations during the winter when everyone else is at home because that is when I have the most fun! I like to travel around a lot, so I plan to take short trips once or twice a year, once in the winter and once in the fall. Plan your travel ahead so that you can plan in advance and don't spend all of your vacation days in the air. When you burnout in the "work" part of your career, if you don't plan ahead, you might be stuck in a situation where you are miserable, bored, and burned out.

Another thing that I recommend is that you plan ahead for vacation time. I know this seems like a strange concept when you are talking about planning a vacation, but this is really how life works. You can plan for vacations weeks, months, or even years in advance. This way, if the unexpected happens, you can springboard from that point. So get ahead of the curve!
