Sudtipos is a type collective that operates as “graphic designers making typefaces for graphic designers.” The result is an absurdly attractive selection of fonts—one look at their Chocolate font will have you running for, well, chocolate. But the story of the four designers that comprise the collective, as they choose to be called, is equally compelling.

Founders Alejandro “Ale” Paul, Angel Koziupa, Ariel Di Lisio, and Charles Bluemlein have extensive experience in the packaging industry, and this is reflected in both the artistic and practical aspects of their fonts. As one would expect, Sudtipos fonts are excellent for packaging that requires both artistic singularity and efficient production characteristics.

But in addition to their commercial acumen, Sudtipos is driven by a shared fascination for early 20th Century American lettering artists. This art form is the basis for many Sudtipos fonts. In fact, Mr. Charles Percy Bluemlein is an early 20th Century American lettering artist: it is actually his original work and his spirit that gives him shared billing at Sudtipos. Alejandro Paul took on the intricate and complex task of transcribing Mr. Bluemlein’s 32 handwritten alphabets— each based on the unique signature of 32 of Mr. Bluemlein’s acquaintances—into modern fonts. The result is the astounding Charles Bluemlein Collection, an absolute must-see.

The latest offering from Sudtipos is Vástago Grotesk from designer Andrés Felipe Ramirez. It is a 9-weight sans serif inspired by original 20th Century grotesques. You will immediately notice something special about this font, a singular appeal that initially evades definition. Its subtle artistic embellishments differentiate Vástago Grotesk from any standard smooth sans. For instance, take a moment and contemplate Vástago’s winding G in both lower and upper case. See? We told you so.

Sudtipos has produced yet another masterpiece based on classic designs. Vástago Grotesk will distinguish your product or project while retaining the smooth readability of the classic sans. At the same time, this modern font subtly hints at the historical grotesques, creating a visual harmony that is a pleasure to behold. Hats off to Sudtipos and Mr. Ramirez for imbuing a sans serif with a dash of character that will take your projects to a new level.

Vástago Grotesk offers multilingual support for Western Europe, Central/Eastern Europe, Baltic, Turkish, and Romanian.
