根据普利茅斯大学和伍尔弗汉普顿大学的研究（PDF），战利品箱在结构和心理上与赌博相似。研究还发现有大量的儿童会去开战利品箱。英国政府已在考虑将赌博法律应用于战利品箱。战利品箱是包含微交易模式的游戏采用的一项功能，玩家在游戏过程中获得战利品箱或直接付费购买战利品箱，打开之后可以获得一些罕见的虚拟物品如武器或装饰。研究发现：在 93% 玩游戏的儿童中，多达 40% 会去打开战利品箱；5% 的玩家产生了战利品箱总收入的一半；年轻男性更可能使用战利品箱。研究称，许多游戏会利用心理暗示鼓动玩家购买战利品箱——如虚拟物品是限时供应或特别优惠。氪金玩家每月可能会在战利品箱上花费超过 100 美元。
