科学家发现，在实验中太阳光灭活新冠病毒所需的时间仅为最新理论模型预测的八分之一，他们呼吁对此展开更深入的研究。太阳光灭活病毒背后的工作原理推测是中波紫外线被 DNA 和 RNA 中的特定核酸碱基吸收之后会导致它以难以修复的方式结合。紫外线有长波紫外线、中波紫外线和短波紫外线，长波紫外线没有足够的能量，能破坏微生物的紫外线只有中波和短波，其中因为地球臭氧层的存在短波紫外线无法抵达地面。研究发现，SARS-CoV-2 新冠病毒暴露在夏天中午的太阳下半小时，九成的病毒颗粒会失去活性，而冬天的太阳光没有类似效果，病毒暴露数天仍然能维持活性。这一速度比理论估计的快得多。研究人员不知道原因，猜测长波紫外线也能以某种方式破坏病毒。研究报告发表在《The Journal of Infectious Diseases》期刊上。
