12 月 6 日，日本探测器隼鸟 2 号从小行星“龙宫”顺利返回地球圈并将装有小行星样品的密封舱送回了地球。12 月 17 日，中国嫦娥五号也从月球带回了其采集的样品。虽然两个探测器探测的目的地相距遥远，但有可能都有助于揭开太阳系演化之谜。隼鸟 2 号的密封舱之中确认装有漆黑的小石块和沙子，样品重量约 5.4 克。其中很有可能大量包含由碳等形成的有机物。嫦娥五号带回了约 1.7 公斤的月球样品。美国阿波罗计划带回了近 400 公斤的月球石头，但着陆地点的形成年代集中于约 35 亿年前。而嫦娥五号则从据称相比起来明显更新的 13 亿～19 亿年前形成的地点带回样品，这一点受到关注。
