A summary of ETHGlobal’s first online, long-form event

It’s been a few weeks since the HackMoney Finale and we are still taking it all in. As ETHGlobal’s first online, long-form event, we were entering into a new environment at the same time as hackers. Suffice it to say, HackMoney blew past our expectations. Here are some high level metrics:

• > 300 hackers submitted projects
• 65 countries were represented in hacker applications
• 120 projects were submitted (check out every project in the the HackMoney Showcase)

HackMoney was only possible with the support of an amazing group of elite sponsors. They make it possible for our team to run an event that is free for attendees with rich programming and support for hackers along the way.

We’re incredibly lucky to get to work with the best companies in DeFi, who went the extra mile to support our hackers. How many events feature multiple DeFi CEOs answering developer questions and giving feedback every single day? Our sponsors managed technical troubleshooting, in-depth AMAs, weekly office hours, and so much more. A huge thanks from the ETHGlobal team! 🙏

The great thing about ETHGlobal events is that even once the hackathon is over, teams keep building their hacks, and the Ethereum community keeps supporting them.

Shortly after HackMoney finished, several teams participated in IDEO’s Defi product validation day. Teams like Potion Insurance, Umbra, EPNS, Uni, Liquorice Gen, DeFi Dollar and Stablepay had a chance to learn first-hand from user interviews how to iterate and advance their project.

Then, a few weeks later, a huge number of HackMoney teams participated in the latest round of Gitcoin Grants, where ethereum users made donations matched by a matching pool of funds contributed by the Ethereum Foundation and other matching partners.

We can’t wait to see where our hackers take their projects over the next weeks and months. A year from now, which HackMoney teams will be familiar brands in the DeFi space?

Ethereum is a developer friendly smart contract platform, and in that regard, the HackMoney hackathon demonstrates just how far ahead the network is compared to its competitors. In a single month, for a single event, Ethereum saw more high quality projects developed and deployed than most so-called “Ethereum killers” see in total for a year. This isn’t about shilling Ethereum, it’s just observing reality.
