Pyro, a deep, universal probabilistic programming language created by Uber AI , was voted in by the Linux Foundation Deep Learning Technical Board as the latest incubation project to join the foundation.

“We’ve already seen an uptick in contributions to Horovod since Uber contributed the project to LF Deep Learning in December of last year. It’s really exciting to see the momentum and progress by the team,” said Ibrahim Haddad, executive director of the LF Deep Learning Foundation. “We are honored to be given the opportunity to bring Pyro into the LF Deep learning as we work with the community to further improve its forecasting and other capabilities.”

Released in October 2017 under the open source MIT License, Pyro marries modern deep learning and Bayesian modeling, facilitating accelerated and more accessible research for AI practitioners using these techniques. Currently leveraged by companies such as Siemens, IBM, and Uber, as well as academic institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and The Broad Institute, Pyro’s acceptance by the LF Deep Learning Foundation will make it easier for organizations to contribute back to the project by providing neutral, community-governed ownership.

“Pyro was originally created at Uber AI Labs to help make deep probabilistic programming faster and more seamless for AI practitioners in both industry and academia,” said Zoubin Ghahramani, Head of Uber AI and Uber’s Chief Scientist. “By incorporating Pyro into the Linux Foundation portfolio, we hope to facilitate greater opportunities for researchers worldwide and make deep learning and Bayesian modeling more accessible.”
