地球在过去 5.4 亿年中经历了五次物种大灭绝事件，其中 2.5 亿年的一次事件导致 95% 的物种灭绝。发表在《Science Advances》的一篇论文发现，向海洋中人为加入的碳数量到达一定的阈值将会触发新的灭绝事件。这个阈值是 3100 亿吨。联合国政府间气候变化专门委员会预测，地球在 2100 年前将达到这个数字，从此将跨入未知领域。过去的大灭绝事件的时间跨度在数千年甚至数百万年，而我们正经历的周期变化最多持续了几百年。许多专家认为我们已经在经历第六次物种大灭绝，其余则是一个科学问题。
