Releasing Today, includes Nov Security Patch + Fingerprint Fix : essential
NMJ32F - Releasing Today, includes Nov Security Patch + Fingerprint Fix
This software update will upgrade your device to Android 7.1.1 - Build NMJ32F. To update, go to Settings > About Phone > System Update.
If you have a Sprint or Telus SIM Card in your phone, you will have to wait for your carrier to approve the update, as usual. See comments for the link to sideload this update.
Changes include:
Google Security Patches 2017-11
Fix for Fingerprint Gesture Related Instabilities
That's it, this update was ONLY the two things listed above. Anything else in the comments that people are claiming this update fixed or broke are imagining things.
How bout them fast updates
Color me impressed
I was really, really concerned about this when I took a chance on the discounted phone. Gutted when the showstopping fingerprint scanner bug got out. But the fact that they got it fixed in a week isn't like any other support I've ever seen. Officially a fan. Officially recommending the phone to anyone who will listen.
I sideloaded because I'm on Sprint. Is there a setting for the finger print gestures? Where do I find that?
First impressions after the update is great. Super smooth scrolling comparing to the Pixel 2. If it doesn't show any hang ups, freezing in the next day or so this is super amazing.
Within a day of Google. Woohoo!
Can anyone post a link for us poor Sprint saps to sideload, pretty please?
+1! I'm with Telus though!
How does one side load I would love to do this but I do not wanna mess anything up
If anyone could comment on how it affects the slow scrolling jittery-ness (not just the fingerprint-related scrolling issue), that'd be great!
From what I can see the jittery scrolling has not been improved.
Not fixed. Have they even acknowledged this? It's the last issue that really makes me miss the pixel. It's almost like a lag, makes the device seem not powerful. I hope it's not some hardware /touchscreen issue because I can't see how this hasn't been fixed yet via a simple software update. It's stock android and a snapdragon 835, 4 GB ram, just like pixel 2, so this device could be as fast as the pixel 2 theoretically.
It's anecdotal, but scrolling feels the same to me. The fingerprint stuff seems fixed after a couple minutes of trying to break things with it.
I think im in the minority but ive yet to experience this slowdown while scrolling, even if i scroll at a snail's pace like the videos do.
We're 2 updates since KRACK fix and Pixels still don't have it lol
One update since the KRACK fix.
Sweet jesus, nice fucking job essential!
This fast of an update is really leaning me towards picking up an Essential Phone
They've been great so far on all 3 security updates that have come out since launch. October had the longest delay, but that was only due to the various improvements and fixes they chose to bundle in with it. :)
It is a really great experience so far. I can't recommend it enough. Especially for $450!
Quick tip for poor saps on Sprint: spend $3 and get a FreedomPop SIM. I've had a SIM from them for awhile and they have a free tier of service. It's AT&T based so swapping the SIM in was enough to let the device call Essential for the update check (just got the new one) rather than Sprint.
I have a FreedomPop sim for when I visit America (Canadian here), and never even thought of this. Telus owns my carrier and they are always behind on updates so this was a life saver lol.
Do we need the FreedomPop SIM account active? I have one of the SIMs but have never set it up.
Does this cause issues when getting back in Sprint's network? Or is it a simple swap?
Has anyone captured the download source for us stuck with sprints horrible updates
BEAST
Downloading now, they weren't kidding when they said they would get faster at pushing these updates
Downloading, YAY
Damn I knew it! Just off on the time!
These guys rock !
Anybody have a link to the download to sideload it?
Anyone have the update for Sprint users?
Is there a page of the history of updates thus far? I'm still on NMI81C and am wondering how many more I haven't received yet 😖
You are now 2 updates behind including this one.
What carrier are you on?
Installing now!
Just finished the update! The fingerprint gesture issue is now resolved for sure! Thanks essential team!
Hot damn, that was quick! Installing now!
Hooray to still being subjected to Wait based on carrier. Can I just remove my Sim and update? I'm tired of waiting an extra 2 weeks for Telus to process the update, still don't have the last one either lmao
You'll need a different sim from a carrier that doesn't officially support Essential
Side load, the files were provided above. :)
Whats the patch date? Nov 1,5, or 6
Nov 5, 2017
So glad they are taking these updates seriously. Good sign for us.
Jesus, c'mon Sprint, stop fuckin around
Installing mine now! Thx, bb
NIceeeee
Does this fix the slow data speeds/poor signal on Tmobile at all?
....if that is even an issue that can be fixed through software?
Ya know my signal does look a little stronger but I seriously doubt that would get fixed without a huge announcement. I will keep an eye on it and see if I see a difference.
I'm about to get my phone in an hour or so and this is good news! You guys are getting me all depressed with this "jittery scrolling" talk though 🙁
People are exaggerating how bad it is.
It’s a minor issue for me but I am much more annoyed by the screen sensitivity issue that I experience
So I just received my phone as we are talking. I am seeing what you are talking about with touch sensitivity. Scrolling seems decent though. I at first thought the scrolling was controlled almost like how iPhone is? Is it supposed to be like this or is it actually touch screen hardware? Is this an acknowledged issue?
Ask essential this in the next AMA I'd like to know too
Thanks to everyone helping out and posting the updates on here.Just updated mine with no issues. I got my phone through Amazon and assumed I wouldn't have to deal with carrier bullshit....fuck you Sprint
Nice!! Where all the haters/negative Nancy's now?? Good job essential!! Wheres the link for us sprint users?
Can anybody with the latest update check and see if the Bluetooth STILL switches off by itself, for no apparent reason... I wear a headset all day long for work. It gets annoying :(
I only have this issue once every week or so. But neither this update, nor the last update addressed it. This is a 7.1.1 problem and should go away when O comes out (Pixel also had this exact issue on 7.1.1).
Great fast update thanks Essential Team
Why can't essential provide a link to the sideload file?
Probably because that would conflict with their agreement with Sprint and Telus.
Ugh. Still on NMI81C. How can Sprint hold back updates so much that we're now two updates behind, especially on non-Sprint bought phones.
I know this is standard but suuuuper annoying nonetheless. At least it's encouraging that Essential is updating very regularly.
Bring on #OreoBeta to this phone,:)
Has anyone notice the multi window ...split screen lol I just noticed !
What's new with multi window?
This was introduced in Android 7.0
The entire phone feels way better. Haven't had random crashes yet and camera apps seem to do better.
After updating, the volume control on my bluetooth adapter (SBH-20) and my phone are separate, but they used to be connected. Any idea why /u/EssentialOfficial ?
I don't have the disable absolute volume checked in developer options.
Sadly phone will won't "doze" overnight. Has to be a radio issue.
So playing with my ph-1 all night..lol (loser).. and out of the box after the updates, I was real curious about all the touch screen scrolling talk. What I see is a touch screen that is not as pressure sensitive as my pixel. Sliding your finger up takes a little more effort to move the screen. Now, when you do scroll and lift your finger up, the scrolling is just about smooth in my estimation to any high end 835 device. The trouble comes when you do NOT remove your finger and scroll. It is then very choppy in most areas. Is this what you guys are seeing? I don't usually keep my finger on the screen the whole time to scroll so I only noticed it sometimes. So to recap, scrolling is very smooth, scrolling while sliding your finger not at all. Can this be fixed? I will be sending my 2XL back cause I really like this phone minus this small issue that I'm hoping can be tuned by Essential.
Thats the issue most complain about. The slow scrolling and NOT lifting your finger. I don't scroll that way so it doesn't bother me, i scroll like you. Move up/down and lift.
Battery life feels back up to its excellent level that the phone had prior to the last OTA
I'm having issues with ADB commands. Most of them are just turning the phone off.
e.g. command - adb reboot recovery - The phone will shut off with this command issued and I need to long hold the power button to get it to start again. I am getting the same behavior within the bootloader as well.
Anyone have insight on this?
Beats some of Google's own phone OTAs! Thank you Essential
In Canada I have a sim from Roam Mobility that I use when I visit the states. I'm wondering if I pop that in, I could get the updates right away instead of waiting on TELUS?
I have a Rogers phone for work. I took out my Telus SIM, popped in the Rogers SIM and I instantly received all the updates. I'd give it a shot with the Roam SIM. Can't hurt!
Anyone else having issues with Pandora strictly attempting to buffer, and almost no songs actually playing, since patching?
Applied and scrolling is as smooth as I would be expected matches my old HTC One or exceeds it
YOU FORGOT TO GIVE US THE 11/6 PATCH TOO!
There's no reason for that patch date since the KRACK fix was included last update
I feel like my screen is more blue. Anyone experience the same?
Simply put, I impulse bought a PH-1 for $100, and it seems to act up when it gets under pressure, or if I look at it funny. Let me explain, in excruciating detail, sorry.
When I first started thinking about getting one, I immediately jumped to the idea of putting an Android 12 based ROM onto it the moment it arrived, which is exactly what I did. As I usually do with something this old, I got it updated to the most recent firmware + software given it came shipped with Android 9. Awhile later, I got official LineageOS onto it along with the officially recommended Gapps package.
Fast forward a day or two after getting everything rooted and set up, (rooted, because I'm spoiled by something else I'm using on another phone and forgot that SafetyNet can sometimes die), and then I noticed that it began to slow to a crawl almost instantly, and then it locked up. A short while longer, maybe 10 or 15 seconds after it locked up, it restarted itself.
I kept running into these random freezes & restarts, and after awhile, I tried out a different ROM. Same issues, and that lead me to dig around for answers, and it seems like a certain combination of firmware might help, which it didn't, which only seemed to fix Chromium browser freezes anyways.
Fast forward to now, and I seriously begin to question if this is a motherboard or battery issue. I was able to recreate the issue fairly often in complex apps like Best Buy or Amazon when on battery power, but the weird part is that it even locked up when opening the keyboard, making a phone call, or when navigating SIM settings, fairly low-power tasks.. right?
When connecting it to a charger, I figured it might prove that it was a battery issue, thinking that it would be able to pull the necessary power directly from the wall if the battery couldn't provide it. Turns out, it still randomly locks up. I tried the included 27W charger, and even a 61W one as well, and it still locked up a bit when poking around at the phone. I don't think the frequency of it locking up changes when it's on AC power either.
Out of curiosity, and while it might not even be accurate, I installed AccuBattery, and from one charge it seems to think that the capacity is at 85%. (It even locked up again just now when I went to check it). It doesn't seem that low to be causing all of these problems, I think.
On a random note, even poking around in Pokemon Go or a throttling tester when it's at or below 15%, it still stays up, albeit attaching the 360 camera makes it trigger a proper shutdown.
For context, the seller mentioned that they purchased it, likely new, in July of 2018, and stopped using it in November 2018, and never used it after that. The condition of the item backs up their claim; it hardly has any cosmetic damage aside from some little scrapes at the top, like it brushed against something that ate away at the matte finish.
I would be more inclined to replace the battery if keeping it connected to AC would prevent it from locking up, and even more so if it wasn't glued shut, but I should be able to open it up just fine given everything else I've worked on.
It brings me back to my original question: battery issue, or motherboard issue? If it's a battery issue, I'll just order one of those 2020+ year batteries that someone linked in this subreddit, but if it's a motherboard issue, I might just send it back via purchase protection, since there doesn't seem to be any unlocked motherboard parts available, aside from literally just one Sprint board.
I'll be honest, I'm just fearing that replacing the battery wouldn't fix it, along with the risk of potentially ruining the screen, but I think I'll get it off in one piece without much trouble, and after that, just a matter of figuring out how to secure the screen again, probably double-sided tape. (And then figuring out the mm width I need, but I guess I can always cut it down if it's too wide.)
Had my first ph-1 at launch, immediately fell in love with it. Sadly it got stolen. Used a galaxy for about 2 years and had to go back to the ph-1. I don't want to stop using my ph-1 but for when the time comes, i just don't know what should be the move. Any recommendations?
Works perfectly, but my ph-1 is dead, so no more use for it. Pay for postage and it's yours
I recently took my Essential PH-1 to Mint Mobile (1 account) and waiting for Ryan Reynolds to reach out - so far so good and saving tons - share code incoming - Nextel chirp & beeps included - prayer hands case - it's a go! Much better service than AT&T and cheaper
