据中国铁路青藏集团披露，青藏铁路提质升级已进入新阶段，西宁至格尔木段预计今年全部完成升级，并将首次开行复兴号动车组。
青藏铁路西格段提质改造工程始于2022年7月，线路全长829.251千米，更换动车组后，运行时速将从120-140公里提高到160公里，最快旅行时间将从6.8小时缩短到4.8小时左右。
据悉，此次提质改造的难点之一，是 整治高原铁路路基冻害，特别是环青海湖段 ，地下水比较丰富，如果路基排水不好就会造成积水，冬天冻胀导致轨道变形，而经过整治后，轨道的平顺性将会更好，动车跑起来又快又稳。
此次改造还将加固桥梁、涵洞，全面提升设备质量，新建海晏站房，改扩建德令哈站房，让动车组可运行和停靠。
