Google 工程师 2016 年在 LLVM 开发者邮件上提议合并 Lanai 后端，表示该芯片为内部使用，他们会维护递交到上游的代码，但芯片的更多信息不方便透露。Lanai 芯片可追溯到创办于 1994 年的一家小型公司 Myricom，这家公司的员工总数未超过 50 人，但半数有博士头衔。Myricom 早期产品之一是可编程网卡 Myrinet，使用的处理器核心叫 LANai。进入 2010 年代之后，Myricom 财务和管理状况不佳，多款产品取消，2013 年核心团队被出售给了 Google，Lanai 相关知识产权也转让给了 Google，留下的 10 名员工没有一人有博士头衔，剩下的产品是没人要的 Myrinet-2G。Google 至今一直在维护 LLVM 的 Lanai 后端，除了 Google 没人接触过该芯片。Google 云服务基础设施使用 Lanai 加速网络。
