AppSignal Now Supports Node.js: Roadmap for the Coming Weeks

Many of us are impacted in one way or another by the Covid-19 virus. At AppSignal, we asked our team to prioritize their families and (mental) health first. We hope you were able to do the same. We are starting to find a new rhythm in these uncertain times, and are continuing on our mission to bring developers amazing monitoring. In that light, we are happy to ship the first version of AppSignal for Node.js.

AppSignal for Node.js

For those new to our product, AppSignal is an all-in-one APM. It combines many features to give you a complete picture of your application’s health.

Thousands of developers in the Ruby and Elixir communities already use and love AppSignal. We monitor over 80 billion requests every month for thousands of developers and hundreds of larger development teams.

We’ve worked on—and have been using—our product for the last seven years. You get an interface that’s optimized for developers, with many integrations (Slack, Github, Gitlab, Trello, you name it) and all the customization options you could wish for.

Today’s Release: Node.js Integration with Express Support

The first version of AppSignal for Node.js ships with an Express integration. It also includes an interface to auto-instrument Node.js modules.

Out of the Box Support

One of the core principles of AppSignal is to make things work smoothly out-of-the-box. Our aim for the coming period is to cover all the most popular tools in the Node.js community. We’ll be integrating and releasing support for the following, over the coming period:

• Express route normalisation
• Fastify
• Apollo
• Redis
• Mongoose
• Postgres

Adding Your Instrumentation

While we build these integrations, some of our APIs might change until we hit the 1.0 release. This means that if you are thinking of instrumenting things yourself based on the current API, send us a message and we’ll help you get started to avoid any breaking changes.

We’re very excited to announce AppSignal to the Node.js community. All our plans come with a 30-day free trial, which we’ll happily extend if you provide us with feedback on the current state of the integration.

Here’s how to install it:

First, sign up for an AppSignal account and add the @appsignal/nodejs package to your package.json. Then, run yarn install/npm install.

You can also add these packages to your package.json on the command line:

yarn add @appsignal/nodejs
npm install —save @appsignal/nodejs

And you can then import and use the package in your bundle:

const { Appsignal } = require(“@appsignal/nodejs”)
