I would push this feature even further with a split history. The Work container would have his own history for instance.

My use case is quite specific but for instance when I do a presentation I have to disable history suggestion in the address bar.

Also, the possibility of adding per-site rules (open ebay.com always on the shoopping container, facebook.com on the Social one, etc)

Firefox already has profiles, which separate just about everything: add-ons, bookmarks, about:config settings, etc. I see this more as a privacy oriented feature, to separate identities and accounts via cookies & similar, while preserving custom user configuration.

level 1

Does this mean that this isn't making it to stable, or is this a temporary move?

level 2

You can already enabled it in Release Firefox, however Containers present some difficult user experience challenges. From my discussions with devs, it sounds like they are relying on addons (both theirs and other 3rd party addons) to flesh out the best features and polished experiences. The webextension API is already in place for it, so addon makers can go crazy making stuff now.

level 2

It could be something you get either by finding it on AMO or enabling it in the settings, but kept as an addon for slimness. People have complained a lot when new features they don't use are built in proper.

I don't really understand what the plan is offering this feature in Nightly and also maintaining a separate extension. Does anyone know why? I think the extension has more features, so maybe the final code will just be merged with the browser in the future and they'll discontinue the standalone extension?

Yes. This is mainly a rename/rebrand.

Can I have different extensions enabled and different Firefox settings per container?

level 2

Extensions are loaded per profile, so I'd imagine the answer is yes.

Can tab groups be made using this API.

level 2

There's an experimental extension called Taborama which aims to replace the old Tab Groups addon.

Isn't this already available in the Nightly?

level 2

Not only Nightly, I'm running stable FF 55 and it is possible to enable it in about:config

Partially.. I always wondered what is up with the nightly version. It just seems to have stopped getting any new updates like the open site in container option or the icon in the add-on they have for containers.

Edit: Just installed it on my nightly and everything carries over to the addon, so it's no biggie if you just want the updated visuals and features.

Containers are built into Firefox, this extension makes them more accessible.

Will this be replacing profiles?

Will this be replacing profiles?

I don't think so. Very different usecases.

When I put getpocket.com in a container the Save to Pocket toolbar button is always logged out even though the getpocket.com website is open and logged in a container tab.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I have the same problem. Not many others have reported it. But if anyone encounters this, please upvote:

So here's a discrepancy... The AMO addon says it's compatible with 51.0a1+. The readme on Github states 53+. Based on it not seeming to do anything on my 52esr, I'm inclined to believe the Github readme is more accurate?

EDIT: Or perhaps the functionality is incomplete on 52. The "Open Container Tab" button seems to work, but the addon's button that it adds to the Location bar does not, nor does the menu that's supposed to show up on the "Open a new tab" (+) button.

There's about a week leadtime between an extension submission and the amo page.

Sorry for the discrepancy. The add-on does require 53+ :/ We've got a PR in to update the add-on & AMO.

I've been using containers for a while and love them, but I've wanted the settings and sites and containers themselves to sync across my computers in order to fully adopt this.
