Did anyone else see that disclaimer during the event? Apparently Original Quality backup is through 2020, and High Quality afterwards.

Not certain, but I read this as - all the photos you take with the pixel 2 by 2020 will be stored in original quality forever. After that, "high quality" will be free.

So in 2021 all your old photos are stored in original quality, but your new photos are not. Maybe?

I read it as "buy a new phone in 2020, and it'll still get free original quality uploads."

I'm expecting this date to change as they release more Pixel phones (assuming they succeed and keep making them, of course)

level 2

I hope so, and it does makes sense if you think about it. On their page they are saying the phone will get 3 years of updates for sure.

That supported time period is the same as the free original quaility.

level 2

That would be my assumption too. In which case, fine, whatever, most upgrade their phones more often than that anyways.

level 2

I'm thinking its similar to free periods for some of the connected services on vehicles. BMW, for example, has its free for five years. Prior to the five years, they don't have a price announced publicly which means:

  1. They don't know what to charge yet.

  2. They don't know if they want to keep it at 5 years, extend it, or shorten it.

level 2

I agree. It's free unlimited original quality for THIS Pixel until 2020. Next year the new phone would be until 2021, etc. I assume it's to prevent people from keeping the device around just to upload everything from it for original quality? I remember seeing posts from people saying ANYTHING you upload from a Pixel is original quality, not just photos taken with a Pixel.

I used the "high" quality until a year ago and it was fine. I'm not taking pro quality shots and don't print them. I value the search and tagging of Google Photos much more than the higher quality images.

In 2016 they made fun of Apple for ditching the headphone jack.

In 2017 they made fun of Apple for not having enough cloud storage.

People were joking about this in the event thread but damn.

level 2

Google still gives 15gb for free and Apple 5gb

level 2

Yea, Pixel XL will probably be my last Google phone. Lost some respect for the company.

level 2

I don't remember a clear jab at Apple for not having enough storage because the Pixel already offered that last year. The jab i noticed at Apple and other companies was that Google not needing 2 cameras when the Pixel 2 can offer the same/better quality with just a single lens.

level 2

And Google's cloud storage option is still way better than apples. They aren't retroactively changing the pictures you backed up either... So if you back up 200 GB of of photos before 2020, you'll still have those at full resolution after 2020. Remind me why they shouldn't take a jab at apples free 5 GB of space?

Can you post a screenshot of that insanity?

Google Store disclaimer for the Pixel 2 says:

Unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel until 15 Jan. 2021, and high-quality storage for all later uploads. Requires Google Account and Internet connection.

so basically it doesn't matter when you buy the pixel 2... everyone with one in hand has a hard stop in 2020?

level 1

Probably means, it follows the device until it becomes EOL. Google confirmed on its page that the device will get updates for 3 years which is 2020.

I'm assuming the 3 years will follow every time a new Pixel is released.

level 1

Does this apply to OG Pixel too?

level 2

I updated my original post. The Google Store shows a different disclaimer that doesn't mention a date.

³Unlimited backups for photos and videos taken with your Pixel phone. Requires Google Account. Data rates may apply.

level 2

They haven't updated to say that on the og pixel page, so hopefully not! https://store.google.com/product/pixel_phone

2020 seems so far in the future but it's just over 2 years. Damn I feel old.
