1957 年 10 月 4 日，苏联发射了第一颗人造卫星 Sputnik 1。它是一个直径 58 厘米重 84 公斤的球体，能展开 4 个杆状天线，它的三个锌银电池占了五分之三的重量，功率仅为 1 瓦，但足够以 20.005 至 40.002 兆赫的频率广播三周的无线电信号。卫星在围绕地球飞行 1440 周后于 1958 年 1 月 4 日进入大气层。当时苏联和美国都透露了在国际地球观测年(1957–1958)发射轨道卫星的计划。对于苏联的成功发射，西方世界倍感敬畏，而美国则感到尴尬。它准备用于反击 Sputnik 卫星的 Vanguard TV3 火箭在起飞 2 秒后就爆炸。苏联的联合国代表团成员还问美国代表是否需要获得苏联为欠发达国家提供的技术援助。公开的羞辱促使美国加速发展太空项目。
