International Service Outage

After being unable to connect to the network (in India) I called Project Fi to troubleshoot, but they're saying there's a Fi service outage over multiple countries, but domestic service appears to be unaffected. No ETA on a fix yet.

Is anyone else having issues?

I'm actually so glad someone has an answer to this! I'm in Germany and Project Fi has gone down hard.

The official app doesn't say anything and there is no email going out.

Google should get way better at communicating with it's service members.

Edit: everything is back up it seems, which is great. But I'm still rather annoyed that we all had to help each other instead of depend on the calendar itself. Do you think they don't think there's enough people outside the US to have warranted concern? That's my idea as to why there was no communication.

I'm glad this is a known issue! I'm going crazy here in Hong Kong and was just about to contact support, when I figured I'd check the subreddit first.

One trick I found is to toggle in and out of airplane mode. You'll briefly get ~2 min of connectivity. Not great, but enough time to check Google map for directions or to message someone you're meeting up with to see where they're at.

It looks like the issue isn't limited to Project Fi, but is with T-Mobile international roaming.

If that is the case, one can try to switch to Three UK in supported countries using the dial code below.

Oh god I thought it was just me. I’ve had no service for the past four hours (greece/Cyprus) and I was traveling. Even landed in a new country and still no service. Thought I got my service cancelled or something! It worked until I put my phone down and a ton of people showed up at the Airpirt so I thought maybe the network was just overloaded haha

I’ve pulled my sim out multiple times and reset the APN. HOpefully I didn’t lose any settings. Is apn supposed to be h2g2?

The team is aware and is investigating the issue. Some users below have noticed it's working again for them.

I'm usually not able to get updates on weekends (remember I'm not a Googler), so please contact Project Fi directly if you're still having issues for the latest information.

Yeah all morning i've gotten nothing here in Argentina, was working fine for past week. Tried manually connecting to other networks, no luck.

In Tokyo, also experiencing this service outage.

I tried using Signal Spy to do a 'Repair' on my connection. Fi responded that my 'SIM is not registered'. From what I know of cellular roaming, it seems that Google is not responding with appropriate auth information for the local carrier to let me onto the network. This seems like a timeout problem.

I can turn airplane mode on, wait 30 seconds, then off, or, force a connection to YMobile/Softbank, and then be online for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes before getting booted off again (presumably because Google didn't respond with roaming creds to my carrier du jour).

I'm getting absolutely screwed over in Spain. I'm abroad with no way to contact anyone, and I can't pop my Verizon sim back in to call support without getting screwed by Verizon. If I reboot my phone I get coverage for 30 seconds then it goes straight to emergency only. I'm very upset

Probably already posted somewhere, but it appears it's probably related to a T-Mobile problem https://www.tmonews.com/2018/01/t-mobile-international-roaming-outage/

Sucks though, I'm going to Canada in a few months and going to rely on my phone (not for anything super crucial, but still), would really suck if there was an outage like this.

Just spent 15 mins with google fi support, they are saying there is no outage, what a bunch of bullshit. Given i am flying and landing in an airport late tonight, really not happy about this.

In Taipei for the past month. Lost service around 6AM GMT time on 1/13. contacted support about it but they didn't mention anything about an outage. thanks for the update OP.

Report

In Hong Kong, lost connection the past 15 hours

Report

I'm having issues in Germany. I connect for about a minute and then lose service again.

Currently in Canada. Everything seems fine here so far, though I do find it kind of weird that I suddenly got a "Welcome to Canada" message for the second time since I arrived here (on the 27th of Dec) and then yesterday I kept getting calls from what appeared to be google fi's number but is apparently someone potentially spoofing it? I never picked up the phone so I'm not sure if it was google or the spam caller but the past events were very unusual.

Update: Service is back in Singapore.

Singapore also out. Has been working fine, then stopped.

Edit to add: I called support. They're adding people to a spreadsheet of affected users and areas, so it's probably worth calling and getting added.

No estimate of resolution.

I had the same issues in Germany beginning about 24 hours ago. Fortunately, I had a spare Project Fi Data SIM that was activated but never installed, which worked. If you have a spare Data SIM, activate it using the 16 character alphanumeric code, then install it with Data APN h2g2 in your device. Good luck, fellow travelers.

Report

Fi is back up in India as well. No official explanation from Google, but considering T-Mobile had an international outage as well, I believe it's safe to assume something went wrong on T-Mobile's end that caused the outage.

It's probably T-Mobile to blame.
