1914年，一个塞尔维亚人枪杀了奥匈帝国的皇太子。这成为了开启第一次世界大战的导火索。2014年故乡的人们为他树立了一座铜像，纪念这位反抗侵略、争取自由的斗士。
一名澳大利亚士兵在一战中不到四个月的时间里，狙杀了150名土耳其官兵，包括未经证实的则为201名，连奥斯曼帝国近卫军里最优秀的狙击手也死在了他的枪口下，因此得到“加里波利刺客”之名，并获受特等军功章。
一个芬兰狙击手在二战期间，创下505人斩的击杀记录，被苏联部队称呼为“白色死神”。2004年芬兰电视节目《伟大的芬兰人》将席摩•海赫列为第74位史上最伟大的芬兰人，享受着无上的荣光。
