PSA for Huawei Watch 2 owners: Disabling “Ok Google detection” fixes the constant stuttering and lag

I picked up the Huawei Watch 2 Classic on Black Friday and I’ve been experiencing terrible lag since day one. But I recently disabled “Ok Google detection” and it completely fixed the issue for me.

The way I discovered this was by running the “adb shell top” command to see what was making the watch lag. It listed the Google app as using a large amount of resources. So I tried disabling various Google services and the one that fixed the lag was disabling “Ok Google detection”

This seems to be a good fix for now but I hope Huawei is able to address this in an upcoming update.

Edit: Some people are reporting that this "fix" works on other watches as well. So if it works for you, great!

This absolutely revolutionized my experience on my HW2, so major kudos and a sticky deserved!

To disable OK Google Detection and magically fix the lag issue on your watch: Settings > Personalization > toggle off "OK Google" detection.

N.B. This seems to work on watches from Fossil too, and maybe more brands! Not Huawei-exclusive.

Does this disable the google assistant completely?

No, you can still invoke it by holding the power button, which I find more convenient anyways.

JFC, Google...

I'm starting to get really frustrated with all the Google shit that just stops working randomly or is causing weird problems on my devices. Wear 2.0 is still a significant usability/reliability downgrade compared to 1.5 (specifically re: OK Google functions, notifications), my Google Home device suddenly stopped understanding a particular shortcut command, my Google Home Mini devices inexplicably can't respond to a command that works on my full sized Google Home, my Gmail widget for my exchange account no longer works, etc. etc. etc.

level 2

Yes, thank you! AW2.0 is kinda terrible and I pretty much hate my 360v2 now.

I read OP's post and the comments here and thought you were all smoking crack.

Got home and did it on my HW2 and BAM, like a new generation of smartwatch, just like that. Shit, I never even used the voice detection...

Edit: I'm gonna go ahead and say this thread should be stickied or this tip thrown in the 'Tips and Tricks' post at the front of this sub. Could positively impact people's perception of Wear.

level 2

Wear 2.0 is disgusting. My Huawei Watch won't recognize my voice anymore and it's a stuttery mess. The display times out before it reponds.

I hate it now and I don't see any other watch to upgrade to (Canada).

level 1

Omg thank you so much for this tip!! The lag has been driving me crazy! Works a charm.

level 1

Thanks, it also fixes it for the Huawei Watch 1 too.

level 2

May as well have it switched off since it never actually works anyway.

Weird because it worked on my Gear Live...

level 2

Was about to say this as well. Have an upvote sir.

Edit: stupid autocorrect...

level 2

So is it an adb command or something in the menu?

level 1

Just tried this on my LG Watch Sport and noticed improvement immediately. Thanks!

Wow, same here on my Explorist. I never say OK Google to my watch anyway, I just hold the button!

It wouldn't surprise me if this also improves battery life. We'll see.

Thanks!

level 1

Holy fuck, this is a really noticeable performance boost. Thanks a lot!

Android Wear really turned into a shitshow. I still love my smart watch with my very own watchface, getting notifications to the arm and convenient access to timers - but there are just as many bugs which really should not be there.

level 1

Is this related to why my Huawei 1 doesn't seem to respond to Ok Google anymore? Even though I've toggled it on,

level 1

I've been having this problem since I bought it and I mentioned a workaround before you posted this. https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidWear/comments/7igeql/psa_for_huawei_watch_2_owners_disabling_ok_google/

After I saw this post, my watch is super smooth right when I turned it off. I never thought this was the cause of the lag. Thank you so much!!

level 1

Seems to improve performance on my Asus Zenwatch 3 as well! Thanks for the awesome tip!

level 1

Incredible! That made a world of difference! I was literally hovering the return button on Amazon when I saw this post. Fixed my biggest frustration with this watch. Love it otherwise!

level 1

Interesting. I already sold my Huawei because the lag was unbearable.

Now I'm intrigued again.

level 2

Likewise. I returned my HW2 Classic because of the ridiculous lag, but if the fix was THAT simple... well...

level 1

Well crap. I keep clicking the wrong thing on my ZW2 because it's moving so fast. I didn't realize how much I'd adapted to what I thought was unavoidable lag.

level 1

Genius. The lag was driving me crazy. Thanks you sir and have an upvote.

level 1

Have you noticed improved battery life?

OpAll-Time Top 100 Poster · 5 yr. agoHuawei Watch 2

No, it only used resources when the watch was awake

level 1

I was skeptical, but there is also a noticeable decrease in lag on my Fossil Q Explorist after doing this. No more 1-second delay opening Weather from my watchface, and no more sub-1-second stutter between the pulldown menu or any settings menus.

OK Google detection rarely worked and Assistant rarely understands anything I say, so nothing of value lost for my watch. (Especially since Assistant is used heavily elsewhere anyway between my phone and Google Home devices)

level 1

Just did this on LGWS - immediate improvement! Thank you for the tip!

level 1

I have never cursed for joy in my life and this has made me closer than I've ever been before. Holy effing crap.

Seems good so far, amazing! Thank you so much.

level 1

I just got my Wear24 today, but so far, with OK Google detection enabled, it's running along really well. If lag creeps in I'll definitely give this a shot!

level 1

Cleared up any stutters on my ZTE Quartz as well

I was tempted to root it and attempt to enable another core because apparently most android wear watches only have 1 of the 4 cores enabled but this has made it smooth enough that I no longer feel the need

level 1

Worked for me too on the Fossil Gen 3

Surely Huawei know about this. Right?!

Oh, and thank you so much for posting this. My watch is running so much smoother now.

level 1

Good call bro! Will be this when my pixel comes in.

level 1

Holy crap, my Zen Watch 3 is flying with this fix, thank you!

level 1

Polar M600. The performance of this little bugger is actually good, even though it's inferior to my old HW2. Disabled Ok Google... watch is literally flying. Thanks!!

level 1

Thank you! I noticed my new Huawei 2 was much slower than my dead Moto 360, despite having better hardware. Now it's running smoothly.

level 1

I noticed this a long time ago, but didn't link it specifically to the Ok, Google feature. I figured out the Google App was causing the stutter and had to uninstall updates and disable automatic updates for a long time. Eventually updated it and things were fine.

I can't believe you were able to put up with that lag for months! When I noticed it it was absolutely insufferable. Just swiping down the quick settings or a notification took several seconds to animate and load. It was absolutely unbearable.

level 1

Good PSA. Thank you.

level 1

Thank you for posting about this!

Noticeable difference on my Zenwatch3. Thanks!

Edit: Seriously....wow. WTF, Google? How was this not already fixed? Such a big improvement.

level 1

Wow, this is awesome. Thank you so much for posting. Shame we need to do this, but the watch is so much better after disabling.

level 1

I don't have an 'OK Google Detection' setting on my LGWS. Is it because I'm in Australia where it was never released?

level 1

Holy shit dude, I love you. I have a Huawei Watch 2 as well and thought the lag was just a part of Android Wear. It's soooo much smoother now.

level 1

Thanks So much, This worked on my Fossil Q series 3, Now it's working like a charm

level 1

Awesome. A noticeable difference, just turning that off. Why would Google actually make their own stuff wreck their own stuff? Makes no sense, unless they actually want people to stop using smart watches altogether.

I wonder if the google execs have shares in apple, and want to increase their value?

Edit. Have an upvote.

level 1

Ok google is disabled per default on most watches, so on mine (Fossil Q Control). So this is not really a hint or tip. Of course I had it disabled per default.

Sadly, the watch lags all the time even without it, mostly in animations, and opening apps, but also scrolling. It even happens often, that I want to start a swipe scroll, and the watch interprets it as a click, and randomly opens something where I touch the finger too. This is also mostly caused by lag, because CPU is at 100% at this moment and wont properly register a swipe scroll input.

How do you do this debug with adb? I guess it is over bluetooth?
