你真的想开悟，或者，你只是满足于追求开悟的过程？
麦肯纳二十来岁时受到启发，相信世上有真相，于是停止一切外在事务，花了几年时间尽力追求了解真相，在30岁时“开悟”，知道自己完成了追寻。他将自己采用的方法称为“灵性自体解析”，亦即以文字书写的方式探究一切说法的真假，直到最后的真相显现。
麦肯纳认为，开悟是关于了悟真相，而不是要成为更好或更快乐的人，不是要达到个人成长或灵性进化。对许多执着于某些大师或信仰的人而言，这不啻为一记棒喝。
