President Biden Is Now Posting Into the Fediverse (theverge.com) 50

Posted by BeauHD

on Tuesday April 02, 2024 @07:30PM from the putting-the-'fed'-in-'fediverse' dept.
President Joe Biden has become the first sitting U.S. president to post on a decentralized networking protocol. As reported by The Verge, President Biden's Threads account "has begun using Meta's ActivityPub integration," which allows for content, data, and followers to be ported between networks -- the basis that makes up the "fediverse." From the report: The account turning on fediverse posting comes only a couple of weeks after Threads rolled out its beta ActivityPub integration for users in the US, Canada, and Japan. Biden may not be able to see replies and follows as they pour in from the fediverse -- and with some servers blocking connections to Meta, not everyone there will be able to see his posts -- as those features weren't part of Threads' integration when it opened up beta testing last month. But his posts are available, and he'll see likes coming in from there. Or whoever is running the Presidential Threads account will, anyway.

He has more important things to do with his time...unlike his predecessor.

In contrast, The Washington Post, which used White House pool reports, reports that Biden spent 256 days on vacation or at one of his homes in Delaware through May 22, 2023.

For context, Biden took office 958 days ago.

Former President Donald Trump spent a little over a quarter of his presidency, around 380 of his 1,461 days in office on personal trips.

Trump's time out of office earned a of media attention because he spent most of his time away, around 250 days, at properties

          • Re:

Yep, because he certainly did a BUNCH of work on those days when his handlers called a lid at 10 AM. The only time he gets any pep in his step is when they stuff him so full of amphetamines he turns into the raving homeless man hanging around the train station.

        • Re:

LOL, remember Trump? Blamed all the past presidents for playing too much golf. Then Trump himself spent way too much time on the links. Trump played 308 times on the links in 4 years; Obama played 333 times in 8 years. This makes Trump the hypocrite. But we all _know_ he's a hypocrite, even his fans know this, they just cover their ears and eyes when the facts pop up.

Trump shows far more signs of senility than Biden does; it's just that Faux News blasts out stories of Biden goofing up while usually bein

        • Ha, that claim is so false. Biden goes home many weekends to his home in Delaware. And that "report" claims every Saturday/Sunday he spends at home is a "vacation". The entire "report" was created to make it look like he was worse than Trump, who was actually golfing alll week long while he should have been doing his job.

        • Re:

Bwahahahahahaha!! Thanks I needed a laugh.

        • Re:

Trump still has enough power to grant himself a golf championship on his own courses. Ignore all the videos of him obviously cheating, I'm certain he won all those awards fair and square. Never mind the photos of him pooping his pants on the course, only look at the doctored ones of himself looking thinner than he was 25 years ago.

A cheater, a liar, a narcissist. What redeeming qualities does he have that would raise him above even the lackluster and mediocre Biden? For the evangelicals out there, Biden

          • Re:

Trump is fine. You can't just say things and make them be true. Stop believing all the crap you read on cnn.

      • Exactly. The man can barely walk. His handlers ought to be charged with elder abuse.

Yes, barely walk. Unlike that makeup wearing con artist who said a ramp on a bright, dry, sunny day was slippery and there wasn't a handrail to hold onto which is why he looked like an arthritic clown creeping down said ramp. Which of course had nothing to do with the lifts in his shoes which is why he always looks like he's about to fall over [twitter.com] while standing still.

          • Re:

If LibsofTikTok can do it, so can I. Or isn't that how it works?

I haven't denied him anything. He is free to post as much as he wants. I am merely exercising my freedom of speech.

Anything which pisses off Musk is a bonus.

            • Re:

              Who did libsoftiktok dox?

              You mean she got doxxed.

She got started by only reposting lib TikTok self videos to Twitter. How is reposting videos posted by the people in them doxxing?

        • Re:

          >"Yes, barely walk. Unlike that makeup wearing con artist who said a ramp on a bright, dry, sunny day was slippery and there wasn't a handrail to hold onto which is why he looked like an arthritic clown creeping down said ramp."

Neither of them is a spring chicken, that is for sure. It seems like geriatric politicians are the norm now- Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer, Trump, Sanders, etc. But for each such rare Trump stumble, there are many, many, many dozens by Biden. And the media has been desperately hid

    • He may not be completely swapped in, but he has staffers who are aware of what's going on in things like decentralized social media, and are trying to keep up.

As a bonus, thhose staffers are not overtly planning to keep him in office past January 2029.

    • It's his Press Secretary.

She often makes a mistaken post under her account and then deletes it and puts it under his account.

He said yesterday he has no idea about social media posts (and blamed Republicans for what his account said).

So, yeah, this article is disingenuous .

      • Re:

        Links for these claims?

      • Re:

Whereas with Trump you know the posts at 3am are from him, because no other human can write gibberish the way a senile Trump can.

        • Re:

Rules for Radicals: accuse them of what you're guilty of.

You can post countless more times that Biden is well and Trump is mentally defective but the bulk of the voters have said in multiple polls and surveys they believe the opposite. But you do you, maybe someone living under a rock the last 4 years will be convinced.

          • Re:

I didn't say Biden was well, but he is more well than Trump. I don't want to vote for Biden, he's not at all what I want in a president, however I'm forced to vote for him because the alternative will be disastrous. Mediocre beats bad any day.

    • Re:

Whoever it is at least understands how to use the Shift/Caps-Lock keys appropriately, unlike that other guy.:-)

    • Unless there was a connection to ICE CREAM.
    • Re:

Someone is running the government, but it isn't him.
    • And itâ(TM)s not the fediverse if nobody can nor has federated either.

  • Wasn't Usenet fairly decentralized?

    • Re:

      Entirely.

  • Watching AI Biden debate AI Trump. https://www.twitch.tv/trumporb... [twitch.tv]

  • if he hadn't posted in the Fediverse through fucking Facebook. I would have been more impressed if he had done it directly on Mastodon or Lemmy.

This is sending all the wrong messages. Thanks whoever-runs-Biden's-internet-PR:(

    • Re:

perhaps your request is too. From Fediverse Wiki:

The US Government should certainly justify their own “instance”, but more to the point the US Government should not be reliant on ANY social media platform for communication. All that does is guarantee that organization gets a Too Big To Fail get out of jail free card, inviting absolute corruption. Nope. Don’t need any more of that shit.

    • Re:

It's a step in the right direction though. Supported by Facebook is still better than simply posting on a privately run media company. Or worse, creating your own horseshit distributor and claiming it is where the Truth is spoken.

  • The fediverse, decentralised echo chambers
    • Re:

Echo chambers filled with reporters and bots.
    • Threads is not decentralized either (nor is Mastodon), the servers are centralized and the management is centralized and with Threads and Mastodon, they are the sole gatekeeper as to what is and isnâ(TM)t allowed to federate on the network. Itâ(TM)s like saying Linux is a decentralized, federated operating system just because you can run your own.
