Sindarina, Edge Case Detective
My profile picture is a black and white photo of Sandra Bullock, starring as Angela Bennett in the movie 'The Net', from 1995. She is on the phone while she looks at something that is out of frame, to the left, clearly wary of her surroundings.

The header photo shows a concrete barrier, sitting next to railroad tracks in an industrial setting. Graffiti is everywhere. On the barrier it says "JK Rowling is actually a huge bitch" in black spray paint.

3/ 🧵

#Alt4You
#Introduction

Privacy tip: When you sell or trade-in a vehicle, remember to erase all of your data from the in-car electronics. The car dealerships will NOT do this, although they should be required to.

This wasn’t done for the last few vehicles I’ve purchased. I know one previous owners name, where she lives, what her taste in music is, where her dad lives (and how often she visited him), and what restaurants she often went to. In the wrong hands, this is dangerous as hell.

Is there a Dutch charity that would help folks who can't afford it with dental care in the Netherlands?

Boosts welcome.

(Yes I googled and did not find one that would be still active. So please refrain from "here is what I googled" results. Obviously not for me, but - for reasons - that's something I want to donate to.)

👋 I’ve been relatively quiet here lately because I’ve been spending a decent amount of time AFK IRL. Specifically I’ve been taking a watercolor painting course at my local college, and it’s been a blast. I’m still learning and experimenting, but I’m looking forward to finding ways to use this in my work going forward.

Here’s a little experiment I did a couple of days ago (because I ❤️ typography).

A watercolor painting of a lowercase g in a gradient that flows from red to violet along the shape of the letterform. There is a lighter shadow-like version of the same letter cast behind the main letter.

Now that I am sort of used to in-car road driving scenes being filmed in a virtual production environment, older projection methods are kind of jarring, and pull me out of the story 🤔

‘Tis Bridget herself from the very top of the cat tree for #WhiskersWednesday. I think she’s seeing one of those invisible things she sees sometimes. #cat #CatsOfMastodon #catstodon

A cute and alert tortoiseshell tabby on a fuzzy tan platform. Two of her little white paws are visible. She’s looking off into an undetermined distance.

I don't think I've drawn my shaman in two or so years and Lich King is winding down, so on a whim I decided to use her to see how the angular style looks on humanoids

#FediArt #MastoArt #CreativeToots #Warcraft

a digital portrait of a blue humanoid with horns and pointed ears, painted from about the waist up. she leans into the image from the left, and is facing to the right. behind her is an abstracted sky of pink and yellow, and hills of bright red. she appears to be wearing clothing made of leather and bone. the overall shape language is angular.

“As European Parliamentarians and Commissioners discuss two major texts on artificial intelligence (AI) in Strasbourg this week, a new study found YouTube’s recommendation algorithm boosted right-wing content in the run-up to Finland’s 2024 elections.”

Not terribly surprising at this point, because it's a recurring problem, but it's good to add another study to the list of evidence that details the money Google makes from platforming right-wing assholes.

“The daily installs fluctuate around 7,500 to 10,000 for most of the period. However, on March 6th, after the iOS update was released, there was a sharp increase in installations, soaring to just over 11,000.”

Along with some selective statistic graphs that show the peak.

Reminder that Brave is trash, and you should avoid using it.

Also, if it's not possible yet, Apple should totally provide an easy way to trigger that browser selection screen after the first time, so people can easily switch if they get stuck with something they don't like, after that first time.

Dear vegans: be very cautious when buying orange juice in the Netherlands. The largest producer is now adding 0,02% cow milk to some variants to avoid the recently raised sugar taxes 😵‍💫

If you are patient enough, you can build your very own Boeing airplane out of parts that fall from the sky.

It's that time again when we're expecting a package being delivered by DHL. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for a driver who tries to actually deliver🤞🏻

No issues this time, thanks driver! 🙏🏻

Some people replace the word "season" with "szn" or the word "please" with "plz." Not all sighted users will know what those spellings are supposed to mean, and many screen reader users won't, either. Many screen readers will read "szn" as S-Z-N and "plz" as P-L-Z.

Buffins! From the book ‘Cats Cats Cats Cats Cats Cats’ by John R. Gilbert, 1961.

Black and white photo of a very cute shorthaired white cat with symmetrical black markings on the sides of its head, looking with a wide eyed expression at the viewer. Text below the photo reads “Buffins, winner of the title of Cat with the Most Appealing Expression in 1958.

Fingers crossed for the remote reboot after fixing the problem🤞🏻

It did reboot cleanly, which is great. Will still need some additional fiddling though, just in different areas this time.

Like motherboards with Intel network chips that barf all over themselves if I install the latest Intel network drivers, sigh.

If you're running to being unable to shrink the system partition, optimise the drive, and then check the event log for 'defrag' messages.

It may be that the 'hiberfil.sys' file is still on disk, even if the GUI configuration seems to have it turned off.

Running 'powercfg -h off' via the command prompt should take care of that, and allow shrinking of the system partition.

By the way, if you still need to do this, the shrinking step may be easier to do via Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management, since that allows you to see how much space is available for shrinkage beforehand, and give you a clearer overview of what is currently where than running 'diskpart' via command prompt.

<insert obligatory comment about Microsoft ditching its QA staff>

For some systems, this recovery partition already exists at the end, thus requiring only a wee bit of shrinkage for the system partition, after which the recovery partition can be removed, and then recreated without leaving unused space, but in some cases it's also at the start.

Which means that you now have 525 MB or so of unusable unallocated space at the start, and need to create a new partition at the end.

But if there are unmovable files, such as the page file, you may not be able to shrink the system partition enough to free up space for a new recovery partition at the end.

All that telemetry, and we're still get this 🙄
